Malapascua is a small island in the Visayan Sea, lying a short boat ride off the northern tip of Cebu and administered as part of Daanbantayan. Measuring only around two and a half kilometres by one, it can be walked end to end in an afternoon, yet it holds an outsized reputation in the diving world. That fame rests on Monad Shoal, an offshore seamount where thresher sharks appear at cleaning stations around sunrise, one of the few places anywhere that divers can see these deep-water sharks with such regularity. Boats leave in the dark so divers can be in the water as the light comes up. Back on land, life centres on Bounty Beach, a broad white-sand strip lined with dive shops, guesthouses and small restaurants where the day slows down once the morning dives are done. The island once lived mainly from fishing, and while tourism now drives much of the local economy, the pace stays low-key and the scale small.

How do I get to Malapascua?
Travellers usually head north from Cebu City by bus or van to the port of Maya in Daanbantayan, then take a short outrigger-boat crossing to Malapascua.
