Dorpsplein 1, 4507 BH Schoondijke
Mon 11:00–20:00; Tue–Wed Closed; Thu 11:00–20:00; Fri–Sat 11:00–20:30; Sun 10:00–20:30
Boone is the eat and drink house on the Dorpsplein, the village square at the heart of Schoondijke. It opens five days a week from late morning into the evening, with an earlier start on Sundays, and closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The menu, published on the website, is split into a tearoom part, a lunch card served until five in the afternoon, and a dinner card. In the tearoom there is Zeeland apple pie, with ice cream and whipped cream if you like, and pancakes with butter and sugar. Lunch brings sandwiches with carpaccio, smoked salmon or warm ham, toasties including one with goat cheese, apple, walnuts and honey, and an uitsmijter, the Dutch open sandwich with three fried eggs, ham and cheese. Starters include a yellow curry soup with coconut milk, cheese croquettes with Parmesan and honey mustard, shrimp croquettes with cocktail sauce, and scampi in what the house calls its well known garlic cream sauce with samphire. Among the mains are a Hereford steak with warm vegetables, a hamburger with cheddar and bacon, spare ribs with aioli, sea bass fillet with homemade tartare sauce, fish and chips, a chicken thigh skewer with satay sauce and prawn crackers, and a vegetarian curry with cashews and naan bread. Children up to twelve have their own section, with fries and a croquette, frikandel or chicken nuggets, or a small portion of ribs. Desserts run to ice cream coupes, a dame blanche, warm cherries and chocolate mousse, and the coffee list ends with Irish, Spanish and Zeeland coffee. Tables can be reserved by phone or by email.
Groede · Steak and grill · Burgers · Fish and seafood
Markt 30, 4503 AH Groede
De Drie Koningen stands on the market square of Groede, the old village near the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen coast. Groede was a Red Cross village during the Second World War, which is why its old buildings and the church square survived, and the restaurant is part of that historic centre. In summer the terrace sits out in the middle of the square; in the colder months guests move inside to a dining room the house describes as having a living room feel. The place has its own beer story. When it reopened in 2012 the landlord arrived with 300 litres of home brewed beer and named it Marckensteijn after the two operators, Marc and Stijn. Brewing started on the premises, grew into the Dutch Bargain brewery and moved to the former village school around the corner, where the Brouwerslokaal now is. Marckensteijn is still poured from the tap here as the house beer, next to Belgian classics and craft beers. The kitchen works with seasonal produce from the region. Lunch is served until five, then the dinner card takes over, both available in Dutch, German and English. Dishes include Zeeland fish soup with rouille, Flemish cheese croquettes made with aged Bruges cheese, shrimp croquettes, rump steak and rib eye, an oven gratinated fish casserole with salmon, cod, sole and scampi in a bisque sauce, a lava grilled house burger and a vegan soy burger. Gluten free bread is available, and children have their own menu. Groups and celebrations can arrange a personalised menu. Same day reservations go by phone or in person, and there is parking about 100 metres away on the Monnikenstraat.
Hornbach · Steak and grill · Burgers · Fish and seafood
Bahnhofstraße 4, 66500 Hornbach
DAS LOKAL occupies the former Capito address on Bahnhofstraße in Hornbach, beside the Pirminiushalle. Its indoor restaurant and Paradiesgarten give it two distinct settings: a room for a meal with friends and a garden beneath old trees for relaxed gatherings. The neighboring Paradiesgartenweg begins next to the beer garden, with a playground and other leisure facilities close by. The food combines substantial classics with salads, pasta and smaller plates. Starters include tomato cream soup, beef carpaccio, gratinated sheep’s cheese and falafel with hummus. Salads come with homemade dressing and toppings ranging from roast beef to prawns or falafel. Broad ribbon noodles are prepared with olive oil, garlic, olives and peppers, or with basil pesto and market vegetables. The steak selection includes roast beef, Iberico pork, beef fillet and turkey. For groups of four steak diners or more, side dishes arrive as a shared table buffet. Other choices include an Iberico schnitzel and the Hornburger, served on brioche with Emmental, braised onions, cabbage and barbecue sauce. Children have a separate selection of schnitzel, pasta, nuggets and fries. Chocolate cake, sorbet and puff pastry provide dessert options. Food also anchors the events program, which includes steak specials, a changing three course dinner, grilling evenings and live music. Private celebrations can use the restaurant, additional rooms upstairs or the neighboring hall, while catering brings the kitchen to events elsewhere. Reservations and celebration enquiries are handled directly by Christian and the team.

Im Klosterbezirk 1, 66500 Hornbach
Klosterschänke & Biergarten is the informal Palatinate tavern within Kloster Hornbach, a former Benedictine monastery now used as a hotel. The restaurant stands in the Klosterbezirk in Hornbach, with an indoor tavern room and a beer garden enclosed by old monastery walls. Its cooking centers on homemade classics and regional specialties, accompanied by monastery beer and wines from the Palatinate. The setting brings together hotel visitors, local neighbors and walkers, with outdoor tables in the warmer season and the tavern room providing an indoor setting in colder weather. The monastery complex has been run as a hotel by the Lösch family since 2000. Christiane and Edelbert Lösch now lead it together with their daughter Franziska. The former monastery retains its cloister and historic stonework, giving a meal here a setting closely connected with the town's past. The family's approach places shared meals and conversation at the center of the stay. The beer garden also serves Flammkuchen, the thin Alsatian style flatbread, while the tavern's offer includes a hearty Klosterbrett platter. This is the more relaxed dining option within a complex that also contains Refugium and the Säulenzimmer, each with its own character. Guests can request a table through the hotel's reservation service or contact the house by telephone. For arrival, the hotel's directions specify Im Klosterbezirk 1; guest parking areas are marked on its site plan.

Poststraße 33, 66482 Zweibrücken
Gleis 3 stands close to Zweibrücken railway station on Poststraße, in a listed building dating from 1932. Its Italian inspired exterior, historic facade and arcade give the restaurant a character quite different from an ordinary station stop. Inside, a central bar divides the space into restaurant and bistro areas, allowing the two sides of the business to share one room. Jeannette and Christian Landoll are the owners. The cooking brings together salads, pasta, schnitzel and beef steaks, with changing creations alongside the main selection. A Niçoise salad combines tuna, olives, onion rings and boiled egg; other salads add turkey, sliced rump steak or prawn skewers cooked in herb butter. Dressings include the house recipe, oil and vinegar, and a balsamic option. Pasta ranges from spaghetti with homemade Bolognese to a spicy house preparation with cream, sambal, pesto and garlic. Tube pasta comes with homemade basil and nut pesto, roasted garlic and cheese. Pork schnitzels use the kitchen’s own toasted bread coating. They can be ordered simply with fries and salad, with mushroom cream, or topped with mushrooms, Camembert and Edam. Rump steak is paired with cognac and pepper cream sauce, while several flavored butters offer an alternative accompaniment. The wine selection reaches from the Palatinate through Italy, France and Spain to South Africa. Tables are reserved exclusively by telephone, and the same number handles orders for the restaurant’s collection service.

Tue–Thu 10:00–17:30; Fri 10:00–21:30; Sat, Sun 12:00–21:30; Mon Closed
De Gecroonde Liefde is on the Nieuwendijk in the old harbour quarter of Vlissingen, a few steps from the boulevard, and it has been run by the same two owners, Ronny Kers and Raymond de Jonge, since 2002. The name is old Dutch for "crowned love", taken from the house. By day it is a place for coffee and lunch - sandwiches, soups, a good steak tartare - and from Friday evening and at the weekend a restaurant with a French-international menu, fish from the Oosterschelde and meat from the region. The room is warm and unfussy, with a bar for a glass of wine, a gin and tonic or a cocktail before or instead of dinner. From Oost-Souburg it is a ten-minute drive or a bike ride along the canal.

Hauptstraße 98, 66497 Contwig
Wed–Fri, Sun 11:30–14:30; Wed–Sun 18:00–22:30; Mon–Tue Closed
Ristorante Classico brings Italian cooking to a former German inn on Hauptstraße in Contwig. The building has been restored with an Italian character, and the restaurant has been serving guests since 2000. Its approach combines traditional dishes with newer ideas, using fresh ingredients and an uncomplicated style of presentation. The setting is intended for a proper sit down meal, with equal attention given to guests arriving as a couple or with children. Families are explicitly welcomed, and a high chair is available for smaller diners. Children can have a small helping of pasta or share a pizza with their parents or siblings. Pizza is also available to take away, so a meal from the kitchen can become part of an evening at home. The food selection includes pasta, meat, fish and seafood, alongside vegetarian choices. Among the dishes presented are buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes, tagliatelle, steak with polenta, and octopus. Desserts include panna cotta and sorbet. Wine is another substantial part of the restaurant’s identity. The selection travels through Italy from the north to the south and across to Sardinia and Sicily. Barolo and Barbaresco represent the reds, while Pinot Grigio is among the white wines; Champagne and Prosecco provide sparkling alternatives. The restaurant offers a separate weekday lunch menu as well as its main selection. Guests arriving by car can park in front without charge. Table reservations are accepted exclusively by telephone.

Kleine Markt 1, 4381 EJ Vlissingen
Tue–Sat 9:00–17:30; Sun, Mon Closed
BLOOM is a coffee bar on the Kleine Markt in the centre of Vlissingen, the kind of place the town did not have for a long time: specialty coffee made with care, matcha and chai, and a lunch card of homemade bagels, wraps and the classics, with smoothies and cakes alongside. Ingredients are fresh and, where it makes sense, from Zeeland. It opens at nine, which makes it a good first stop before a day on the boulevard or the beach at Vlissingen, and it stays a calm room for a coffee break in the afternoon. Closed on Sunday and Monday.

Hauptstraße 132, 66497 Contwig
Gasthaus Bärmann is a fourth generation hotel and restaurant on Hauptstraße in Contwig, where a history of innkeeping and butchery still informs the food. The house favors personal hospitality, regional ingredients and seasonal cooking, with Palatinate wine and beer alongside substantial meals. Its current autumn selection includes chanterelle soup, lamb’s lettuce, braised fallow deer with porcini gravy and bread dumplings, and venison fillet with tagliatelle and kale. Chocolate mousse and apple strudel with cream provide a sweet finish. The broader menu includes homemade potato soup and clear beef broth with marrow dumplings and Maultaschen. Schnitzel comes in several preparations, including a breaded pork version with lemon and fries, a mushroom cream variation, and turkey cordon bleu filled with ham and cheese. Rump steak can be served with herb butter and fried onions or pepper cream sauce. Fish and seafood choices include poached salmon with Riesling cream and prawn skewers on buttered noodles. Meat free alternatives include spinach dumplings with sage butter and a vegetable noodle pan with mushrooms, peppers and herbs. Themed food events are part of the house’s routine, from steak and herring meals to its traditional Schlachtfest. The autumn program also includes local game and roast suckling pig. Family celebrations are another specialty: weddings, birthdays, communions and confirmations can be arranged for up to fifty people, with an individual menu or buffet. The team also helps plan catered celebrations away from the restaurant.

Via San Lorenzo 1, 70017 Putignano
Tue–Sun 19:30–00:00; Mon Closed
Premiata Pizzeria is run by Valerio and Luigi Loliva on Via San Lorenzo in Putignano. Valerio oversees the dining room, while Luigi directs the kitchen and selects ingredients. Pizza is the central theme, with an emphasis on combinations that connect Italian tradition with products from Puglia. The kitchen identifies local dairy produce, including mozzarella and provolone made with milk from Puglian farms, alongside Capocollo di Martina Franca, Rosso Gargano tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil from local cultivars. Its oven combines a traditional domed form with a rotating hearth and gas heating. Gluten-free pizzas and other gluten-free preparations are made on the premises, and suitable items are identified on the menu. Beyond the regular dining experience, the pizzeria offers Sulle Botti in Dispensa, a small private meal centered on a table fashioned from an old barrel. Set among the working pantry’s flour and preserves, it accommodates up to six people. The chef creates a seasonal sequence that includes starters, pizza, a pasta course and an artisan dessert. This experience requires advance arrangement and has a different booking process from an ordinary table. The wider offer also includes a pizza-making experience with Gigi, covering dough preparation, shaping and baking. Regular table requests can be submitted online and are confirmed by message or telephone. For guests interested in both eating pizza and understanding the ingredients and work behind it, Premiata offers several ways to approach the same kitchen.

Piazza Plebiscito 8, 70017 Putignano
Botteghe Antiche faces Piazza Plebiscito in the historic center of Putignano, beneath the palace that houses the Museo Principe Guglielmo Romanazzi Carducci di Santo Mauro. Its name recalls the artisan workshops that once animated this part of town. The restaurant brings that connection with the past into a setting where contemporary design accompanies the older building. Inside there is space for up to forty diners. In the warmer season, tables extend onto the square, with aromatic herbs around the outdoor area and the church bell tower forming part of the surroundings. Chef Stefano D’Onghia builds his cooking around memories of regional food, reinterpreting familiar preparations through presentation and technique. Ingredients follow the seasons, with an emphasis on small producers and a sustainable supply chain. The result is a changing menu rather than a fixed collection of dishes intended to remain identical throughout the year. A basket of bread and focaccia made in the kitchen welcomes guests at the table, giving the meal a direct connection to the restaurant’s own daily preparation. Wine is another substantial part of the offer: the cellar lists eight hundred labels, encompassing conventional and natural wines. The restaurant’s character comes from the combination of its position on the square, its interest in local culinary memory and the chef’s willingness to reshape that inheritance. Tables can be requested through the online booking service or by telephone. It is a useful choice for visitors who want their meal to remain closely connected to Putignano’s historic center.

Via Santa Chiara 1, 70017 Putignano
Angelo Sabatelli is on Via Santa Chiara, at the corner of Via Fornello in Putignano. The restaurant offers tasting menus alongside an à la carte selection, with two different approaches to the chef’s cooking. The Classics brings together established dishes in a selection that changes with the seasons. Extra-territorial Emotions connects his professional experience in Italy and Asia with local produce. Those two directions give a useful starting point when choosing how to experience the kitchen. Regional ingredients appear in combinations such as seafood cavatelli with chicory and broad bean puree, or orecchiette with ragù and canestrato fondue. Elsewhere, basil soba, onion and foie gras gyoza, and lobster tempura introduce different techniques and seasonings. The repertoire extends from fish and shellfish to lamb, pigeon and suckling pig. Desserts continue the interplay of familiar and unexpected ingredients, including ricotta with wheat and orange blossom, and chocolate with candied lampascioni and artichoke liqueur. Tasting menus are served to the whole table, while the à la carte format requires a minimum of three courses per person. Reservations can be made through the restaurant’s booking system or discussed directly by telephone. For arrival, the team recommends looking for parking on Via Margherita di Savoia, then approaching on foot along Via Fornello and turning into Via Santa Chiara. This makes the final approach part of a walk through Putignano rather than a drive directly to the door.

CLOUD is a restaurant on Via Putignano in Castellana Grotte, combining Italian and international cooking with live music evenings. The kitchen includes regional recipes, fish and cheese, with vegetarian, vegan and lactose free choices also available. Wine and fruit cocktails form part of the drinks selection. Baked goods can be enjoyed as dessert, and a buffet is another part of the food offering. For visitors choosing somewhere to spend an evening together, that combination gives several different reasons to consider the same address. Outdoor tables and a heated terrace provide places to sit outside, while air conditioning serves the interior. The setting therefore offers a choice between an open air meal and time indoors. Live music adds another element to the restaurant's social character. A meal here can be planned around conversation, food and entertainment, depending on what matters most to your group. Check the program directly when music is part of your plans. Private events can be arranged with the venue. Free parking is available for guests, and the restaurant states that access is free of architectural barriers. There is complimentary Wi-Fi and a separate smoking area. Payment options include credit and debit cards, contactless payments, bank transfers, PayPal, checks and cash. Guests arranging a celebration can contact CLOUD to discuss their plans, while anyone with specific dietary requirements can ask about suitable dishes before deciding what to order.

HoneyPie is a lunchroom on Achter de Houttuinen in Middelburg, and it wears its subject openly: the house motto is that a balanced diet is a piece of cake in each hand. Cake is the point here, and lunch is served around it rather than the other way round. Beyond the daytime menu the kitchen does three things worth knowing about in advance. There is a high tea, which is booked rather than walked into. There is a picnic, packed to be taken away — a sensible idea in a province where the coast and the dunes are twenty minutes from the front door. And there is cake to go, sold whole or by the slice, which is the reason to stop here on the way to somewhere else. It opens from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon, Tuesday to Sunday. Monday it is closed. Those are daytime hours in the strict sense: this is not a dinner restaurant, and arriving at seven in the evening will find it shut. Achter de Houttuinen runs along one of the old canals in the centre of Middelburg, a few minutes on foot from the abbey and the market square. Oost-Souburg is five kilometres away, an easy ride by bicycle along the canal. You will find HoneyPie at Achter de Houttuinen 50, 4331 NJ Middelburg.

Il Covo is an Italian restaurant on Via Conversano in Castellana Grotte, with a broad food offer that includes pizza, burgers and local recipes. It also presents a buffet, giving diners another way to explore the kitchen alongside individually chosen dishes. The combination makes it a practical possibility for a party whose members want different kinds of food at the same table. For visitors planning a meal together, deciding between a pizza, a burger and regional cooking can be part of the pleasure; there is no need for everyone to begin with the same preference. The restaurant describes gluten-free and lactose-free preparations, so guests with dietary requirements have a reason to discuss their choices directly with the staff. Air-conditioned rooms provide an indoor setting, and a children’s corner gives younger guests a dedicated area. Step-free access, parking with attendant service and complimentary Wi-Fi are among the facilities offered. Payment options include cash, contactless payment, Mastercard, Visa and PayPal. Beyond meals at the restaurant, Il Covo provides home delivery and can supply catering. Private events can also be arranged with the team, making the venue relevant to family occasions and other gatherings as well as an ordinary meal out. Calling ahead is a useful way to bring a group’s needs together, especially when a celebration, a particular dietary requirement or catering is involved. The restaurant can be contacted by telephone or through its message form.

De Herberg stands on the Pottenmarkt in the middle of Middelburg and describes itself as your living room in the heart of the town — informal, open to everyone, and open from ten in the morning until midnight, seven days a week. The house line is "just like home, but with better food and drinks", which is at least honest about what it is aiming at. The single long opening covers everything in one room: a coffee with cake in the morning, a full lunch, and in the evening brasserie dishes from the barbecue. The menu deliberately sets classics beside things that are not — North Sea bouillabaisse next to Korean sticky ribs, house-made falafel and a proper set of vegan dishes rather than one token plate. There is a terrace, and a list of special beers to sit outside with, which on the Pottenmarkt means watching one of the busiest squares in Zeeland go past. Because it never closes between services, this is the practical answer to the awkward hours — a late lunch at three, or something to eat at ten at night, both of which are hard to find in a Dutch provincial town. Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland, five kilometres from Oost-Souburg — close enough to cycle, and served by a direct train that takes four minutes. You will find De Herberg at Pottenmarkt 2, 4331 LM Middelburg.

Basalt is the fish restaurant of Middelburg, and it says so without hedging. It stands in the Sint Janstraat in the historic centre, close to the old fish market, and the whole kitchen is built around fish, wine and what the Dutch call the Burgundian way of eating — slowly, and at length. The offer changes, which is the important detail: what is served depends on what came in from the market that day rather than on a fixed card. In Zeeland that is a real distinction. The province sits between the North Sea and the delta, and mussels, oysters and flatfish come out of water a few kilometres from the table. A restaurant that rewrites its list around the catch is buying differently from one that does not. The room is described by the house as domestic in feel rather than formal, and there is a wine list built to go with the fish. It serves every day, lunch from midday to four and dinner from five to eleven, with a short break between. Booking is the sensible course in a small centre-of-town dining room. Middelburg is five kilometres from Oost-Souburg, four minutes by train, and the Sint Janstraat is a few minutes' walk from the station side of the old town. You will find Basalt at Sint Janstraat 34, 4331 KD Middelburg.
Irrhausen · German home cooking · Cakes and pastries · Lunch

Im Pfenn 3, 54689 Irrhausen
Im Pfenn takes its name from the old local word for the boggy, moorish ground the house stands on, a quiet spot outside Irrhausen in the German-Luxembourg nature park, a short way north of Arzfeld. Christine and Michel Munkler built the house with its barn and stable in 1938; the stable became a tavern in 1961, the barn a guest house, and in 1966 the 'Gasthaus Munkler' opened to the public. The second generation added the large dining room in 1978, and since 2001 Christiane and Oswald Urfels have run it, with son Markus Gutweiler as co-manager since 2021, which makes it a family business in its fourth generation with around forty staff. The main restaurant seats up to 80, a room under the roof takes 25, and a large sun terrace with about 40 seats looks out over the countryside. The kitchen's own phrase is Eifel tradition meeting modern regional cooking, built on fresh products from nearby. Two things are named as specialities: the filled cream puffs served in the afternoon, and from November onwards game dishes from the family's own hunting, which they process themselves. Weekday lunch is deliberately kept small. Birthdays, weddings, closed parties and company events are catered with menus, buffets or themed evenings. Outside there is a play and sports field for children, and the paths into the surrounding forests, meadows and streams start at the door, which is why the house welcomes families, groups, hikers, cyclists and motorcyclists alike and carries the 'Wanderbares Deutschland' hiking certificate.

De Pannekoekenbakker in Oostkapelle is a pancake house on the Domburgseweg, on the island of Walcheren in Zeeland. The Dutch pannenkoek is a meal rather than a breakfast dish — a plate-sized pancake served either sweet or savoury — and this is a house that does nothing else, which is worth knowing before you arrive expecting a menu. The restaurant sets itself up as the stop after a day outside: a walk along the sea, a bicycle ride through the dunes, an afternoon out. That is a fair description of Walcheren, where the coast, the woods and the villages sit within a few kilometres of one another, and it is why the kitchen runs straight through the day rather than in two sittings. There is a children's club, so this is a room built for families rather than one that tolerates them, and gift vouchers and arranged packages are sold through the restaurant's own site. The house recommends booking, which on a wet Sunday in the holiday season is not a formality. It is open seven days a week, from half past eleven in the morning until half past eight in the evening — unusually long for the Dutch coast, where many kitchens close between lunch and dinner. Oostkapelle lies on the north coast of Walcheren, about twenty minutes by car from Middelburg and Oost-Souburg, and rather less by bicycle along the dunes. You will find De Pannekoekenbakker at Domburgseweg 75, 4356 BK Oostkapelle.

Gasthof Restaurant Löwen occupies a longstanding family inn on the Dolomites Road in Nova Levante. Built as a postal station in 1885, the house has remained with the Plank family and is now run by its fifth generation. That continuity gives the restaurant a local story extending well beyond its role as a place to eat during a mountain holiday. In the kitchen, Walter and his son Markus prepare the food themselves. South Tyrolean specialities share the menu with Italian dishes, and a changing daily selection follows the seasons. Local produce forms an important part of the cooking. Herbs come from the house garden, while vegetables grown in its own beds appear as seasonal accompaniments. Homemade dumplings in different variations are among the restaurant's characteristic dishes. The dining room welcomes both hotel residents and visitors coming solely for a meal, making it an option for travelers staying elsewhere in the valley. Its combination of regional and Italian cooking offers room for different preferences without losing the connection to South Tyrol. Larger family gatherings and company parties can also be accommodated, with menus arranged around the occasion. The inn stands directly on the road through the valley and has public transport connections to Bolzano and the Carezza area. For visitors exploring the Dolomites, it combines the practical accessibility of a village inn with a kitchen still closely connected to the family that runs it.

Via San Valentino 5, 39056 Nova Levante
Johannesstube is the gourmet restaurant associated with Hotel Engel in Nova Levante, where chef Philip Lochmann builds his cooking around the ingredients and landscape of South Tyrol. The emphasis falls on clarity, careful preparation and the individual flavor of each element. Alpine produce provides the starting point, while experience beyond the region informs the combinations and techniques. This is a place for a considered meal, with the progression of dishes carrying as much importance as any single ingredient. The restaurant expresses that approach through Moments of Lightness, a sequence whose names evoke earth, rain, woodland and the changing sensations of the natural world. The language reflects a kitchen interested in atmosphere and memory as well as taste. Lochmann's work connects contemporary ideas with regional products, using precise combinations of texture and aroma to keep the cooking focused. The wider Engel kitchen works with producers in the Eggental valley through the Taste Local initiative. Vegetables, herbs, fruit and eggs come from farms in the region, reinforcing the connection between the surrounding countryside and the plate. Within that setting, Johannesstube gives the house's culinary philosophy a particularly concentrated expression. Guests interested in modern Alpine cooking will find an experience organized around ingredients and a coherent sequence rather than a broad menu of unrelated classics. Table reservations are requested, and the restaurant provides a direct telephone contact and booking route for arranging a visit.
Nova Levante · Steak and grill · Fish and seafood · Lunch
Wirtsweg 4, 39056 Nova Levante
Marions Grillstube by Mannius brings an unusually hands-on approach to steak in Nova Levante. A charcoal grill stands inside the restaurant, while guests who enjoy taking charge of their own cooking can choose meat served on a heated stone at the table. This makes the meal as much about comparing cuts and choosing the finish as it is about ordering a familiar steak. The kitchen also prepares handmade starters, fish and desserts, accompanied by a selection of wines. Its own sauces are an important part of the restaurant's identity: recipes developed for the dining room have grown into a separate range of ketchups, dips and seasonings. Tomato and chili combinations sit alongside apple and ginger, giving diners several different directions to explore with grilled meat. The lunch menu extends well beyond a single steak dish. Starters include beef tartare with homemade bread, carpaccio with black truffle, and goat cheese with fig chutney and walnuts. Homemade tagliolini come with either truffle or a combination of prawns and scallops. Other choices include Black Angus tagliata, pork ribs and chicken, with vegetables and fan potatoes accompanying the main courses. For a more exploratory meal, the hot stone tasting combines different meats in one serving. It suits visitors who want to compare textures and flavors rather than settle on one large cut. Tables can be requested through the restaurant's online reservation system.

Bitburger Straße 1, 54673 Krautscheid
The Islekhöhe stands on the high ground at Krautscheid, on the Bitburg road south of Arzfeld, in the stretch of the Eifel called the Islek where Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium run together. The family that runs it says it has been welcoming guests from near and far for two hundred years, and the house is still a family-run Pension with a regional restaurant attached rather than a hotel with a dining room. The kitchen's promise is put simply on the site: good home cooking, fresh Eifel products and generous portions, with a menu of local specialities and a sample card to download. Meals are served in a modern, comfortable dining room or, in fine weather, on the sunny terrace; in the evening there is a separate Bierstube with Bitburger Pils on tap, the sort of room where a walk is talked over rather than a wine list studied. The house has built its offer around active guests. Motorcyclists have three lockable garages with space for twenty to twenty-five machines and a bikers' weekend package; there is a tennis hall with a tennis weekend, hiking-and-bowling arrangements, and a newly installed charging point for electric vehicles. Guest rooms are kept simple and comfortable, with the clean Eifel air as the main amenity. For someone staying in a holiday home nearby it works as a proper dinner stop on weekday evenings and as a lunch place at the weekend, with the tri-border landscape starting right outside the door.

LIVIN'ITALY sits under the railway arches at Granary Wharf, on the canal side of Leeds station, and is three things in one space: a bar, an Italian restaurant and a deli. The arches give the room its shape, and the house makes a point of the fact that it is Italy lived rather than staged. The family business began in Milan in the 1980s, with the founders' parents and what they describe as a love of good food and honest hospitality; the Leeds house opened in 2012. It has been consistently named among the best Italian restaurants in Britain since. The four words the family uses for what it does — passion, tradition, integrity, simplicity — are worth repeating because the menu follows them: ingredients chosen for where they come from, dishes meant to be shared. Because the deli and the bar sit alongside the kitchen, the same address covers a morning coffee and a Negroni after midnight. Food can also be collected to take away, and gift vouchers are sold on the site. It opens at midday during the week and at ten at the weekend, running to half past eleven, and to half past midnight on Friday and Saturday. Granary Wharf is directly under Leeds station — a covered walk from the platforms. You will find LIVIN'ITALY at Wharf Approach, Granary Wharf, Leeds LS1 4BR.

Tharavadu is a Kerala restaurant on Mill Hill in the centre of Leeds, and the distinction matters: Kerala is the far south-west coast of India, and its cooking — coconut, curry leaf, tamarind, a great deal of fish — is not the north Indian repertoire that most British curry houses serve. The house motto is pure devotion to quality and authenticity, and the kitchen holds to the one region. It opened in June 2014 and the recognition followed quickly. In 2015 it was named best Indian restaurant in Leeds at the Oliver Awards and placed in TripAdvisor's top ten Indian restaurants in the United Kingdom. In 2016 it appeared in the Michelin Restaurant Guide and in Harden's, and took the Oliver Award again. The restaurant describes itself as part of a wave of serious kitchens that changed how Leeds thinks about Asian food, which is a fair claim for a room that arrived before most of them. Service runs Monday to Friday in two sittings, lunch from midday to two and dinner from five to ten. On Saturday it stays open straight through from midday to ten. On Sunday it is closed altogether, which catches people out. Mill Hill sits between the station and the city square, a few minutes' walk from Leeds railway station, so this is one of the easiest addresses in the city to reach without a car. You will find Tharavadu at 7-8 Mill Hill, Leeds LS1 5DQ.

Six by Nico on East Parade does one thing, and it does it differently every six weeks. The whole offer is a six-course tasting menu built around a single theme — a place, a concept, an idea — and when the six weeks are up the menu is thrown away and a new one replaces it. Recent themes have included Circus and New York. That format is the reason to know about it in advance rather than to walk past it. There is no permanent card to fall back on: what you eat depends entirely on when you come, and a dish you liked will not be there next time. It also means the room rewards a second visit in a way an ordinary restaurant does not, and the house publishes what is cooking now and what is coming next on its own site. Booking is effectively required, and vouchers are sold and redeemed against the experience — the house asks that a voucher balance be checked before arrival rather than at the table. Groups and private events are taken. It is open every day from midday to eleven at night. East Parade runs parallel to Park Row in the middle of Leeds, minutes from the Town Hall and a short walk from the station. You will find Six by Nico at 9 East Parade, Leeds LS1 2AJ.

Laynes is a coffee house on New Station Street, immediately outside Leeds railway station, and it opened in 2011 into a city that had almost nothing of the kind. Fifteen years later it is the address people give when asked where the coffee is, and the restaurant is direct about what it set out to do: give Leeds a place that paid absolute attention to the quality of two ingredients, coffee and possibly milk, in a room where somebody would explain them. It has grown past that. There is a kitchen now, and the house claims some of the best breakfast and lunch in the city centre — a claim it can make because most of its competition is a chain. There is a Laynes bakery, and beans are sold through an online shop for anyone who wants to take the coffee home. Opening is early and long: half past seven in the morning to seven at night on weekdays, from eight on Saturday, and a shorter Sunday from nine to four. Tables can be booked, which for a coffee shop is unusual and says something about how busy it gets. New Station Street runs from the station entrance into the city, so this is the first door you pass arriving in Leeds by train and the last one leaving. You will find Laynes at 16 New Station Street, Leeds LS1 5DL.

Riva Blu stands on Park Row in the middle of Leeds and cooks southern Italian — which is a narrower thing than Italian, and the reason the room is worth singling out. The south is the half of Italy that gave the world tomato, chilli, oregano and durum wheat pasta, and a kitchen that commits to it eats differently from one working through the whole country. It functions as a restaurant and a bar together rather than a restaurant with a bar attached, and takes private events and celebrations in its own rooms. Gift cards are sold through the restaurant's site, and tables are booked the same way. The hours are generous by the standards of a British city centre. Midday to eleven at night from Sunday to Thursday, and midday to midnight on Friday and Saturday — one unbroken service, so a late lunch at four or an early dinner at six are both possible without waiting for a kitchen to reopen. Park Row runs through the financial quarter between the Town Hall and the river, a few minutes on foot from Leeds station and from the Victorian arcades. If you are staying anywhere central this is walking distance, and it is one of the streets that stays busy into the evening after the offices empty. You will find Riva Blu at 11-12 Park Row, Leeds LS1 5HD.

Sukhothai is a Thai restaurant on South Parade in central Leeds, and it has been open since 2002 — long enough in a city centre to have outlasted most of what opened around it. The house describes what it does as Thai fine dining, which here means the cooking treated as a kitchen discipline rather than as a takeaway menu. The name is the old capital of Siam, the kingdom that preceded modern Thailand, and it sets the register the restaurant is aiming for. Beyond the ordinary card there is private dining and, unusually for the cuisine, a Thai bottomless brunch — a British format applied to a Thai kitchen, which tells you the room is not run as a museum piece. The hours want attention because they change across the week. Monday to Friday it is an evening restaurant only, from five to ten, and to eleven on Friday. Saturday it opens at midday and runs to eleven. Sunday it opens at midday and closes at eight. Anyone arriving for a Wednesday lunch will find it shut. South Parade is in the middle of the city, a short walk from the Town Hall and from Park Row, and about ten minutes on foot from Leeds station. You will find Sukhothai at 15 South Parade, Leeds LS1 5QS.

Bahnhofstraße 8, 54649 Waxweiler
The Hotel am Schwimmbad is a traditional guesthouse with a restaurant, a Pilsstube and a sun terrace, on the road that drops from the centre of Waxweiler down to the outdoor pool by the river Prüm. Run by Jeroen van der Zalm, it is open all year and takes its role as the village inn seriously: the restaurant serves Eifel regional specialities in a plain, welcoming setting and is set up for family celebrations, while the beer lounge opens late in the morning. The terrace is the reason to come on a fine day, with a wide view across the Prüm valley and down onto the swimming pool. Upstairs are seven guest rooms with television, shower and toilet, enough for a group of up to eighteen, and the rooms face the valley rather than the street. The list of guests the house names says a lot about who feels at home here: families, motorcyclists, who get a covered shelter for their bikes, walkers and cyclists on the Prümtal cycle path, who can lock their bicycles away, pilgrims on the Way of St James, who can have their pilgrim passport stamped, anglers, who can buy a permit for the Prüm, technicians and business travellers, and winter sports visitors. Dogs are accepted by request. There is generous parking, including space for large vehicles. The setting is the Deutsch-Luxemburgischer Naturpark, close to the point where Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg meet, and the pool next door makes it an easy afternoon for families with children before an early dinner.

La Corona is the Italian restaurant on the main street of Waxweiler, the small town in the Prüm valley a few minutes' drive east of Arzfeld. It opened on 15 November 2013 and has since marked its tenth anniversary, which the house mentions with some pride. The dining room is done in a modern style and the owners describe the place as family-friendly, with comfort and a warm welcome as the point rather than any show. The kitchen works with fresh, high-quality ingredients. A meal can start with an aperitif or a cocktail, Martini, gin and tonic or a Negroni, and the wine list is Italian, drawn from several regions. There are homemade soups and fresh salads, pizza bread straight from the oven, and pizzas with a crisp base and generous toppings. Pasta comes with sauces made in-house, and for those who want meat there are schnitzel and Cordon Bleu. Tables can be reserved through the website, which is worth doing for a group on a weekend evening. Music evenings are held from time to time. Beyond the restaurant the family runs a pizza food truck that brings the same oven-baked pizza to private parties and events in the region, with quotes on request. For a holiday-home guest it is the straightforward option for an evening out that does not involve a long drive: Italian food in the middle of the town, with a Sunday lunch service as well as evenings later in the week.

Heilhauser Mühle 1, 54649 Manderscheid
The Heilhauser Mühle is a converted historic mill on the L12 between Lünebach and Waxweiler, down in the Prüm valley where the road runs between trees and water. The family has run it as a Landgasthof for more than thirty years and is now in its third generation; a small campground sits on the same grounds. Inside there are several distinct rooms: the snug Mühlenstube, a sunny winter garden, a fireplace room and a rustic barn whose glass floor looks straight down onto the old, illuminated mill wheel. Outside, a beer garden and a terrace face the mill pond, and the house recommends them as the stop after a walk. The cooking is regional country fare, running from schnitzel to rump steak, with game specialities, fish, vegetarian options and children's dishes, plus seasonal recommendations that change with what is available. Examples the house names are the 'Eifelliebe' salad with curry dressing, chicken and fresh fruit, the 'Mühlenknacker', a stuffed pancake filled with minced meat and cheese, and at weekends fresh salmon in wine sauce with rice and salad from the buffet. The mill lies directly on the Prümtal hiking trail, the Prümtal cycle path and the Panoramaweg 100, so hikers and cyclists arrive on foot or by bike and families come for a long Sunday lunch. Family celebrations, walking groups and company outings can book a set menu or a rustic buffet, and groups can be received outside the regular hours by arrangement. The house closes for a winter break each year and reopens in spring.

Hauptstraße 41, 54649 Lambertsberg
The Fünfmädelhaus in Lambertsberg has been in the same family for more than 150 years and is now run by the fifth generation, a Gasthaus with a Pension attached, standing high above the Prüm valley with forests and meadows all around. It is a big house for a village: 24 guest rooms with 52 beds, a restaurant with its own bar, a summer beer garden, two bowling lanes and a function hall that can seat up to about 140 people, which is why weddings, birthdays, family reunions, Christmas parties and club outings end up here. Motorcyclists get free covered parking and pets are welcome by arrangement, and the house lists walkers and cyclists exploring the Südeifel among its regular guests, with plenty for children in the area. The kitchen describes its line as regional classics and seasonal dishes prepared with care, and the menu shows what that means in practice: a cream of sweetcorn soup with black tiger prawns, smoked salmon tartare with avocado and burrata foam, a well-hung Angus rump steak with Café de Paris butter, and the 'Original Eifler Strohschwein', straw-reared pork from the region served Wiener Art or as Cordon Bleu with peas and carrots and potato gratin. There is homemade tagliatelle with burratine and tomato sauce for vegetarians, guinea fowl breast with truffled mushroom pasta, and sea bass in a spiced Asian broth. Desserts change daily, and the ice creams include homemade sorbets. Four-course festive menus and buffets are arranged for parties on request.

Keplerstraße 101, 76287 Rheinstetten
Beim Jannis serves Greek food at the clubhouse of MSC Taifun Mörsch on Keplerstraße. Its setting combines an air conditioned dining room for up to a hundred people with a spacious beer garden. Couples, families and larger groups are welcome, and the indoor space can accommodate birthdays, family celebrations and company events. Traditional Greek recipes and Mediterranean ingredients shape the kitchen's approach. A meal can begin with several small dishes. The menu includes tzatziki, spicy feta cream, eggplant cream and vine leaves, as well as warm preparations such as breaded sheep's cheese, grilled peppers and baked eggplant slices. Seafood starters include anchovies, prawns cooked with garlic and tomatoes, and grilled octopus with lemon and olive oil. The grill section covers gyros, souvlaki and bifteki stuffed with sheep's cheese. Mixed plates combine different cuts and preparations, while lamb has a section of its own. Fish and seafood choices include salmon, pike perch, calamari and prawns. There are also dishes from the oven, including moussaka and meat baked with Metaxa sauce and cheese. Vegetarian main courses offer more than a side salad: choices include peppers filled with rice, eggplant filled with vegetables, and briam with sheep's cheese. A separate children's selection includes gyros, schnitzel and pasta. Desserts return to Greek flavors with yogurt, honey and walnuts or galaktoboureko, a pastry filled with semolina cream. Tables can be requested directly from the restaurant, including for gatherings that need a larger arrangement.
Rheinstetten · Italian · Pizza · Vegetarian
Rheinaustraße 53, 76287 Rheinstetten
Da Gino is an Italian restaurant and pizzeria on Rheinaustraße in Mörsch. Giovanni Scarafile is the proprietor, and the restaurant presents itself as a place for Italian cooking in a comfortable dining setting. It offers meals at the table as well as a separate menu for collection, giving visitors a choice between eating out and bringing food back to their accommodation. Pizza is a substantial part of that collection menu. The familiar starting points are Margherita, mushroom, salami and ham pizzas, followed by combinations such as tuna with onions or ham with pineapple. A vegetable pizza pairs its tomato and cheese base with fresh vegetables. Guests who prefer a stronger topping combination can choose the Piccante, which brings together ham, salami, peppers and hot chili peppers. Other variations change the sauce or the shape. Bolognese pizza uses a tomato and minced meat sauce, while the Salsiccia version adds spicy salami and onions to that base. The folded calzone contains ham, salami and fresh mushrooms. Flammkuchen provides another direction, using crème fraîche with bacon and onions; a further version adds cheese, mushrooms and garlic. The classic pizzas are offered in two sizes. The restaurant is directly beside the Rheinaustraße tram stop, as described in the municipality's restaurant guide. That makes public transport a practical option for a meal here. For table reservations or questions about collecting an order, guests can contact the restaurant directly by telephone or email. The house publishes separate restaurant and kitchen schedules.

Jakobstraße 3, 76287 Rheinstetten
Beim Bruderbund is a restaurant and beer garden on Jakobstraße in Rheinstetten's Mörsch district. German cooking provides the starting point, with regional dishes and Mediterranean influences extending the selection. The dining room accommodates up to 130 guests, while the beer garden has another hundred seats for eating outside. The business is represented by Zorica Radulovic-Ibrajter, and the team describes more than three decades of experience in hospitality. The menu moves between familiar comfort food and grilled specialties. Maultaschen, the filled pasta associated with southwestern Germany, appear with onions, mushrooms or a baked topping. Schnitzel, pork tenderloin, rump steak and a mixed grill sit alongside fish and seafood preparations. Pasta and salads provide further choices, while a children's section includes smaller schnitzels and simple side dishes. The restaurant also prepares family celebrations and company functions, with the room and arrangements adapted to the occasion. Its garden offers an alternative setting in suitable weather. Food, sauces and accompaniments are prepared by the kitchen, and the house asks guests to allow time for that preparation. Planning ahead is particularly useful here. Reservations are taken by telephone or WhatsApp, and advance booking is required for weekends and public holidays. Guests should receive confirmation of their request. Payment can be made in cash or with an EC card; credit cards are not accepted. The kitchen concentrates on guests dining at the restaurant and does not take orders for collection.
