Santa Ponsa
Mercader del Mar stands on the Avinguda del Rei Jaume I, the avenue that runs the length of Santa Ponsa on the south-west coast of Mallorca. The kitchen is Mediterranean and its single named speciality is paella — which on this island means the rice is the dish rather than a side, and it is worth ordering as one.
Two practical points the house makes about itself. It is open all year, which is not ordinary in a resort town where a good part of the strip shuts from November to March. And the kitchen runs straight through, midday to midnight, every day of the week — so there is no dead afternoon between services, the thing that catches out anyone eating on a northern European clock.
There are separate cards for children and for desserts, and the site is kept in Spanish, English and German, which tells you plainly who eats here.
The restaurant belongs to a Mallorcan group that also runs Puerto Portals and several houses along this avenue, so the standard is consistent between them and the menus have a family resemblance.
Santa Ponsa lies about twenty minutes west of Palma, on a sheltered bay with a sand beach, and the avenue is its main street.
