Paseo del Mediterráneo 32, 04638 Mojácar
Aku Aku is a beach restaurant at Playa del Cantal, combining Mediterranean cooking with a tradition of live music beside the sand. Rice is a particular focus, although the menu extends across salads, raw seafood, grilled fish, fried fish and meat. The restaurant describes its cooking around fresh ingredients sourced nearby, while its concert programme brings flamenco, rock and pop into the beach setting. Rice dishes are prepared to order for at least two people. Choices include monkfish and prawns, cod and leeks, cuttlefish and cabbage, and a vegetable rice. Other combinations bring together Iberian pork, young garlic and artichokes, or rabbit and snails. Seafood paella and black rice sit alongside these preparations, giving guests several directions within the restaurant's central speciality. The rest of the menu makes it possible to build a meal differently. Salads include rocket with pear and Parmesan, and burrata with tomatoes, plums and basil. Raw preparations feature salmon with mango aguachile and red tuna tartare with coconut ajoblanco. From the grill come sardines, cuttlefish, tuna and a monkfish and prawn skewer, while the fried fish section includes anchovies and squid. Meat choices include the house burger, chicken and Iberian pork. Homemade desserts range from cheesecake and lemon meringue pie to chocolate mousse with olive oil and salt. Guests can reserve a table directly with the restaurant. Food and music give Aku Aku its two main identities, bringing a rice restaurant and a seaside concert venue together.

Plaza del Arbollón 1, 04638 Mojácar
Calima brings Moroccan and Mediterranean cooking together on Plaza del Arbollón in Mojácar village. Its food draws on Morocco, the Middle East and Africa alongside Andalucía and the Spanish Mediterranean coast. An indoor dining space and a terrace offer two settings for exploring a menu that moves between vegetables, pastry, fish and slowly cooked meat. Homemade bread and Moroccan tea belong to the same approach, linking the smaller accompaniments to the main dishes. Starters include zaluk, made with roasted aubergine, tomato and garlic, and taktuka, combining peppers, tomato, courgette and spices. A Syrian salad brings together tomato, cucumber, onion, raisins, mint and parsley. Hummus provides another vegetable option. Pastelas take the cooking in a different direction: the chicken version includes almonds and warming spices, while the seafood version combines prawns, hake and squid with rice noodles. The tagines offer several distinct combinations. Lamb comes with prunes, almonds and sesame; chicken is paired with olives and preserved lemon. A kefta tagine combines minced beef, tomato and egg, and there is also a fish version. Couscous can be ordered with lamb, beef, chicken or vegetables. Spanish dishes appear alongside these preparations, including squid, patatas bravas and prawns with garlic and chilli. Children have a separate menu section with croquettes and potatoes. To finish, the choices include baklava, coffee panna cotta and a white chocolate dessert with cream and yoghurt. Guests with questions about allergens can discuss individual dishes with the staff.

Avenida La Parata 21, 04638 Mojácar
Restaurante La Parata occupies a hillside setting in the Andalusian hamlet of La Parata, above the beach area of Mojácar. Terraces, gardens and views shape the experience, while a bar offers another place to sit with a drink. In cooler weather, a fire adds a different character to the restaurant. Richard and Louisa welcome guests with a style centred on seasonal ingredients and cooking that gives the produce room to speak. Richard Shepherd heads the kitchen, developing a changing menu with ingredients from local suppliers. The sample menu shows Spanish foundations alongside wider influences. Starters include pipirrana, the Andalusian tomato, pepper, cucumber and onion salad, and caramelised goat cheese from Lorca with pineapple and chipotle chutney. Seafood preparations include prawn fritters and baked queen scallops. Main courses range from tuna with pipirrana to pork cheeks with Pedro Ximénez and chorizo cassoulet. Vegetarian choices include sweet potato and chickpea sambar, mushroom rigatoni and squash risotto with smoked Manchego. Desserts continue that variety, with lemon posset, coconut panna cotta, torrijas and Spanish cheeses among the sample choices. Since the menu changes, these dishes illustrate the kitchen's approach rather than a fixed selection. Families can request half portions of selected dishes, and the team can accommodate particular children's tastes with advance notice. High chairs and baby changing facilities are available. Reservations are encouraged by telephone or email, and guests with food allergies are asked to mention them when booking so the kitchen can discuss their needs.

Paseo del Mediterráneo 62E, 04638 Mojácar
Neptuno stands beside Playa del Descargador on Mojácar's Mediterranean shore. Fish cooked over embers, espetos and rice dishes form the centre of its cooking, with an emphasis on traditional recipes and ingredients sourced nearby. The setting brings the beach directly into the experience: the restaurant faces the sea, and steps lead down towards the sand. It is a place built around the connection between coastal cooking and its surroundings, with the water providing the backdrop to a meal. Behind the restaurant is Fran Andreu, who grew up in Orihuela in Alicante. Large gatherings of family and friends, home cooking and wine shaped her interest in hospitality long before she worked in restaurants. Her earlier career included banking, advisory work and property. While living in Mojácar and working in property, she heard that the Neptuno beach restaurant might be available and bought it with an Irish business partner. She subsequently took over running it herself. That personal history remains part of the restaurant's identity. Its cooking developed towards Mediterranean recipes prepared in house, with attention to local produce and the surrounding environment. The main choices revolve around the sea, whether through the direct heat of the grill or the rice preparations that are another house speciality. Guests can request a table through the restaurant's reservation service or contact the team by telephone. Neptuno also offers gift vouchers for meals, extending its emphasis on gathering around a table to celebrations and presents.

Tharavadu is a Kerala restaurant on Mill Hill in the centre of Leeds, and the distinction matters: Kerala is the far south-west coast of India, and its cooking — coconut, curry leaf, tamarind, a great deal of fish — is not the north Indian repertoire that most British curry houses serve. The house motto is pure devotion to quality and authenticity, and the kitchen holds to the one region. It opened in June 2014 and the recognition followed quickly. In 2015 it was named best Indian restaurant in Leeds at the Oliver Awards and placed in TripAdvisor's top ten Indian restaurants in the United Kingdom. In 2016 it appeared in the Michelin Restaurant Guide and in Harden's, and took the Oliver Award again. The restaurant describes itself as part of a wave of serious kitchens that changed how Leeds thinks about Asian food, which is a fair claim for a room that arrived before most of them. Service runs Monday to Friday in two sittings, lunch from midday to two and dinner from five to ten. On Saturday it stays open straight through from midday to ten. On Sunday it is closed altogether, which catches people out. Mill Hill sits between the station and the city square, a few minutes' walk from Leeds railway station, so this is one of the easiest addresses in the city to reach without a car. You will find Tharavadu at 7-8 Mill Hill, Leeds LS1 5DQ.

Laynes is a coffee house on New Station Street, immediately outside Leeds railway station, and it opened in 2011 into a city that had almost nothing of the kind. Fifteen years later it is the address people give when asked where the coffee is, and the restaurant is direct about what it set out to do: give Leeds a place that paid absolute attention to the quality of two ingredients, coffee and possibly milk, in a room where somebody would explain them. It has grown past that. There is a kitchen now, and the house claims some of the best breakfast and lunch in the city centre — a claim it can make because most of its competition is a chain. There is a Laynes bakery, and beans are sold through an online shop for anyone who wants to take the coffee home. Opening is early and long: half past seven in the morning to seven at night on weekdays, from eight on Saturday, and a shorter Sunday from nine to four. Tables can be booked, which for a coffee shop is unusual and says something about how busy it gets. New Station Street runs from the station entrance into the city, so this is the first door you pass arriving in Leeds by train and the last one leaving. You will find Laynes at 16 New Station Street, Leeds LS1 5DL.

Riva Blu stands on Park Row in the middle of Leeds and cooks southern Italian — which is a narrower thing than Italian, and the reason the room is worth singling out. The south is the half of Italy that gave the world tomato, chilli, oregano and durum wheat pasta, and a kitchen that commits to it eats differently from one working through the whole country. It functions as a restaurant and a bar together rather than a restaurant with a bar attached, and takes private events and celebrations in its own rooms. Gift cards are sold through the restaurant's site, and tables are booked the same way. The hours are generous by the standards of a British city centre. Midday to eleven at night from Sunday to Thursday, and midday to midnight on Friday and Saturday — one unbroken service, so a late lunch at four or an early dinner at six are both possible without waiting for a kitchen to reopen. Park Row runs through the financial quarter between the Town Hall and the river, a few minutes on foot from Leeds station and from the Victorian arcades. If you are staying anywhere central this is walking distance, and it is one of the streets that stays busy into the evening after the offices empty. You will find Riva Blu at 11-12 Park Row, Leeds LS1 5HD.

LIVIN'ITALY sits under the railway arches at Granary Wharf, on the canal side of Leeds station, and is three things in one space: a bar, an Italian restaurant and a deli. The arches give the room its shape, and the house makes a point of the fact that it is Italy lived rather than staged. The family business began in Milan in the 1980s, with the founders' parents and what they describe as a love of good food and honest hospitality; the Leeds house opened in 2012. It has been consistently named among the best Italian restaurants in Britain since. The four words the family uses for what it does — passion, tradition, integrity, simplicity — are worth repeating because the menu follows them: ingredients chosen for where they come from, dishes meant to be shared. Because the deli and the bar sit alongside the kitchen, the same address covers a morning coffee and a Negroni after midnight. Food can also be collected to take away, and gift vouchers are sold on the site. It opens at midday during the week and at ten at the weekend, running to half past eleven, and to half past midnight on Friday and Saturday. Granary Wharf is directly under Leeds station — a covered walk from the platforms. You will find LIVIN'ITALY at Wharf Approach, Granary Wharf, Leeds LS1 4BR.

Sukhothai is a Thai restaurant on South Parade in central Leeds, and it has been open since 2002 — long enough in a city centre to have outlasted most of what opened around it. The house describes what it does as Thai fine dining, which here means the cooking treated as a kitchen discipline rather than as a takeaway menu. The name is the old capital of Siam, the kingdom that preceded modern Thailand, and it sets the register the restaurant is aiming for. Beyond the ordinary card there is private dining and, unusually for the cuisine, a Thai bottomless brunch — a British format applied to a Thai kitchen, which tells you the room is not run as a museum piece. The hours want attention because they change across the week. Monday to Friday it is an evening restaurant only, from five to ten, and to eleven on Friday. Saturday it opens at midday and runs to eleven. Sunday it opens at midday and closes at eight. Anyone arriving for a Wednesday lunch will find it shut. South Parade is in the middle of the city, a short walk from the Town Hall and from Park Row, and about ten minutes on foot from Leeds station. You will find Sukhothai at 15 South Parade, Leeds LS1 5QS.

East Parade 9, Leeds, LS1 2AJ
Mon 12:00–23:00; Tue 12:00–23:00; Wed 12:00–23:00; Thu 12:00–23:00; Fri 12:00–23:00; Sat 12:00–23:00; Sun 12:00–23:00
Six by Nico on East Parade does one thing, and it does it differently every six weeks. The whole offer is a six-course tasting menu built around a single theme — a place, a concept, an idea — and when the six weeks are up the menu is thrown away and a new one replaces it. Recent themes have included Circus and New York. That format is the reason to know about it in advance rather than to walk past it. There is no permanent card to fall back on: what you eat depends entirely on when you come, and a dish you liked will not be there next time. It also means the room rewards a second visit in a way an ordinary restaurant does not, and the house publishes what is cooking now and what is coming next on its own site. Booking is effectively required, and vouchers are sold and redeemed against the experience — the house asks that a voucher balance be checked before arrival rather than at the table. Groups and private events are taken. It is open every day from midday to eleven at night. East Parade runs parallel to Park Row in the middle of Leeds, minutes from the Town Hall and a short walk from the station. You will find Six by Nico at 9 East Parade, Leeds LS1 2AJ.

Main Road, Pontesbury, SY5 0RR
Zenna is a Chinese restaurant at the end of Main Road in Pontesbury, the village in the Rea Valley south-west of Shrewsbury. It fills a timbered building with high ceilings and large windows, and the tables are generously spaced. There is easy parking on the street, and the double front doors give step-free access. The menu is long and the set menus are good value. Regulars recommend the crispy duck, beef with peppers in black bean sauce, salt and pepper chicken and ginger chicken, and there are vegetarian dishes such as vegetable chow mein and sweet and sour vegetables.
Minsterley

Drury Lane, Hopesgate, Minsterley, SY5 0EP
The Stables Inn has stood at Hopesgate since 1680, built as a drovers' inn for the farmers walking their stock from Wales to Shrewsbury market, and it still feels like one: low beams, a fire in the bar, the pub dog somewhere near it. It sits high in the Shropshire Hills, so the beer garden looks out over the Stiperstones side of the county. The kitchen cooks fresh, locally sourced food - a short main menu from Wednesday to Saturday and a Sunday roast that regulars book ahead for - and the pumps carry Shropshire real ales. There are rooms and a shepherd's hut for anyone who does not want to drive back down the lane. Opening days are limited and can change with the season, so a phone call before setting out is sensible.

Station Road, Minsterley, SY5 0BA
The Crown & Sceptre is Minsterley's village pub, family-run, with one big room that serves as lounge and bar, a separate dining room and two open fires that earn their keep in winter. Part of the old wattle-and-daub frame is left visible behind perspex, a reminder of how long the building has been here. The food is homemade pub cooking - fish and chips, gammon, pies - with a Sunday lunch that fills the dining room, so it is worth booking. One changing real ale in summer and two in winter, often from Wye Valley. There is a lawn and patio at the back, a bowling green, live music once a month, and dogs and children are welcome, children until 8 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Holly House, Minsterley, SY5 0BA
Little Efes is the takeaway in Minsterley for the evening when nobody wants to cook: Turkish grill and kebabs from the charcoal, doner and shish in bread or on a plate with rice and salad, plus burgers, pizzas and chips for the rest of the table. Portions are generous and the meat is cooked to order rather than kept warm. It is a small place, mostly collection, with a couple of seats while you wait. Cash only - there is no card machine - so bring notes. For a cottage stay in the Hope Valley it is the nearest hot meal after the pubs have stopped serving food.

36 Crosslikey, Churchstoke, SY15 6AL
Archie-Lily's is a family-friendly cafe at Crosslikey in Churchstoke, on the Welsh side of the border with Shropshire. It opens for breakfast and cooks homemade food through lunchtime, and it is a favorite for a Sunday lunch. The cooking is classic British cafe fare - breakfasts, sandwiches and burgers - in generous portions at fair prices, with vegetarian options and ice cream to finish. Orders tend to arrive quickly, there is plenty of parking, and the cafe is easy to reach in a wheelchair.

Golden Fish is the Chinese takeaway on Castle Road in Churchstoke, a village in the Powys border country near Montgomery and Bishop's Castle. The menu covers the traditional Chinese dishes, the portions are generous, and customers praise the quick, friendly service. It opens in the evening, which makes it the easy answer to dinner after a day out in the hills. In October 2024 Powys County Council gave the kitchen the top food hygiene rating of 5, "very good".
