L'Hort

Masia Hort de Fortunyo, Partida Calcines s/n, 43597 Arnes

+34602569626

L'Hort is the restaurant of Hort de Fortunyo, a stone farmhouse hotel outside Arnes, among olive trees near Els Ports. Paula C. Loureiro and Manuel Francés bring experience from different countries and kitchens to a menu rooted in Terra Alta. Local produce and vegetables from the property's garden provide the foundation, while the recipes also make room for flavours learned further afield. The published menu shows how that approach works. A vegetable quiche sits alongside wild-croaker ceviche with sweet potato, fried squid with lime allioli and tuna with passion fruit. The meat section gives particular attention to lamb from Els Ports, while pork ribs are glazed with honey from Arnes. These are examples of the kitchen's repertoire; the season and available produce determine what is offered when you visit. Rice dishes and a substantial wine selection create several ways to build a meal. The listed rice preparations include rabbit with green beans, seafood rossejat and cuttlefish rice with cauliflower. A seasonal menu and a longer L'Hort menu are also advertised. Anyone with allergies or dietary requirements should discuss them when booking, particularly when choosing a set menu. The farmhouse setting and terrace make this a meal to plan into a day around Arnes or Horta de Sant Joan. Reserve directly through the restaurant's booking link and confirm the service you need. Its appeal lies in the combination of a rural setting, a productive garden and regional ingredients handled with an outward-looking approach.

Carretera T-334, entrada de Horta de Sant Joan, 43596 Horta de Sant Joan

+34977435714

Can Joan stands beside the T-334 at one of the entrances to Horta de Sant Joan, with views towards the Els Ports mountains. This small family restaurant concentrates on home-style cooking and gives visitors several ways to stop: a substantial breakfast, a daily menu, a sandwich or a more leisurely meal with wine from Terra Alta. The advertised selection includes slowly cooked spoon dishes, meat dishes, salads, toast and combination plates. The range is useful when a group arrives with different appetites after exploring the village or countryside. Those interested in the traditional side of the menu should ask about the day's stews and the esmorzar de forquilla, the hearty, knife-and-fork breakfast that the restaurant specifically offers. Can Joan also has a connection to Horta's culinary history. The university-backed Cuina dels Genis project recorded a local recapte recipe associated with its kitchen, combining beans, chickpeas, vegetables and pork products. That historical recipe illustrates the resourceful cooking of the area; the current daily menu is the best guide to what will actually arrive at your table. Inside, the restaurant has space for forty-eight diners, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The team also welcomes enquiries about group meals, meetings and celebrations. Contact them in advance for opening times, table availability and any dietary requirements, particularly if you are organising a meal around an excursion. A glass from the D.O. Terra Alta selection provides another way to explore the surrounding region while taking a break from the road.

Restaurant Miralles

Horta de Sant Joan · Spanish · Mediterranean

Avinguda de la Generalitat 19–21, 43596 Horta de Sant Joan

+34977435555

Restaurant Miralles brings the farming traditions of Horta de Sant Joan into a family hotel on Avinguda de la Generalitat. Its cooking centres on patient preparation and ingredients from the surrounding countryside: garden vegetables, local olive oil, artisan bread, naturally grazed lamb and wines from the family's vineyards. It is a particularly interesting stop for visitors who want a meal connected to the agricultural landscape of Terra Alta. The house speciality is crestó en escabeche, a slowly prepared goat dish with a story of its own. Salvador Miralles helped preserve the local white-goat tradition after the herds of Els Ports declined. The restaurant explains that the animals' mountain grazing and careful husbandry are central to the dish. Ask about its availability when reserving, especially if trying this regional speciality is the reason for your visit. There are different spaces for different occasions. The Nurianna dining room has stone arches, timber beams, a fireplace and a wood-fired oven; a smaller private room accommodates celebrations. A separate, larger dining room has mountain views and space for groups. Weekday and weekend menus are offered, alongside arrangements for organised meals and family occasions. The Miralles family's hospitality grew from a modest local inn into the present hotel and restaurant. For a day exploring Horta or the nearby mountain country, reserve a table directly and discuss the current menu and any dietary requirements. The slow-cooked local speciality and the family's own produce give the meal its distinctive character.

Holly House, Minsterley, SY5 0BA

Little Efes is the takeaway in Minsterley for the evening when nobody wants to cook: Turkish grill and kebabs from the charcoal, doner and shish in bread or on a plate with rice and salad, plus burgers, pizzas and chips for the rest of the table. Portions are generous and the meat is cooked to order rather than kept warm. It is a small place, mostly collection, with a couple of seats while you wait. Cash only - there is no card machine - so bring notes. For a cottage stay in the Hope Valley it is the nearest hot meal after the pubs have stopped serving food.

Station Road, Minsterley, SY5 0BA

+441743650688

The Crown & Sceptre is Minsterley's village pub, family-run, with one big room that serves as lounge and bar, a separate dining room and two open fires that earn their keep in winter. Part of the old wattle-and-daub frame is left visible behind perspex, a reminder of how long the building has been here. The food is homemade pub cooking - fish and chips, gammon, pies - with a Sunday lunch that fills the dining room, so it is worth booking. One changing real ale in summer and two in winter, often from Wye Valley. There is a lawn and patio at the back, a bowling green, live music once a month, and dogs and children are welcome, children until 8 pm on Friday and Saturday.

The Stables Inn

Minsterley

Example photo of the cuisine — not photographed at this venue Luca Volpe Productions / Pexels

Drury Lane, Hopesgate, Minsterley, SY5 0EP

+441743891344

The Stables Inn has stood at Hopesgate since 1680, built as a drovers' inn for the farmers walking their stock from Wales to Shrewsbury market, and it still feels like one: low beams, a fire in the bar, the pub dog somewhere near it. It sits high in the Shropshire Hills, so the beer garden looks out over the Stiperstones side of the county. The kitchen cooks fresh, locally sourced food - a short main menu from Wednesday to Saturday and a Sunday roast that regulars book ahead for - and the pumps carry Shropshire real ales. There are rooms and a shepherd's hut for anyone who does not want to drive back down the lane. Opening days are limited and can change with the season, so a phone call before setting out is sensible.

Restaurant Ca l'Àngels

Prat de Comte · Spanish · Mediterranean

Example photo of the cuisine — not photographed at this venue Vladimir Gladkov / Pexels

Carrer de la Font 6, 43595 Prat de Comte

+34615304347

Ca l'Àngels is a small hostal and restaurant on Carrer de la Font in Prat de Comte, a village close to Els Ports. The restaurant's focus is traditional Catalan cooking with vegetables from its own garden. It suits a visit built around the inland villages and mountain countryside, with substantial, familiar dishes at the centre of the experience. The house describes a repertoire of slow-cooked meals: escudella, other stews, meat with potatoes and cod with potatoes. Its local restaurant profile also highlights rabbit and chicken cooked in a casserole, grilled meats, baked cod and fricandó. Together they give a clear picture of the kitchen's style, with the emphasis on home cooking rather than an elaborate tasting format. Ask which preparations are available on the day. The dining room accommodates around seventy people, and the restaurant accepts arrangements for celebrations and meals prepared to order. A daily menu and a wider choice of dishes are advertised locally, along with breakfast, lunch and dinner service. This makes it useful to discuss the occasion when booking: a straightforward stop during an outing needs different arrangements from a family gathering with a fixed menu. The address places you in Prat de Comte, rather than in the centre of Horta de Sant Joan, so allow for the journey through the surrounding countryside. Contact the hostal directly to confirm restaurant hours and your table. For guests looking for a regional meal, the garden produce, casserole dishes and village setting are the main reasons to make the trip.

Zenna is a Chinese restaurant at the end of Main Road in Pontesbury, the village in the Rea Valley south-west of Shrewsbury. It fills a timbered building with high ceilings and large windows, and the tables are generously spaced. There is easy parking on the street, and the double front doors give step-free access. The menu is long and the set menus are good value. Regulars recommend the crispy duck, beef with peppers in black bean sauce, salt and pepper chicken and ginger chicken, and there are vegetarian dishes such as vegetable chow mein and sweet and sour vegetables.

14 Avenue de l’Angoumois, 16190 Montmoreau

+33545678334

Le Bistroquet is Catherine and Thierry Laporte's restaurant on Avenue de l'Angoumois in Montmoreau. Its cooking follows the market and local produce, with homemade dishes served in a bistro setting. The town's restaurant guide also highlights a lunchtime dish of the day and wine by the glass, making it an option for lunch as well as a more leisurely evening meal. The kitchen's own illustrated dishes give an idea of its range. Examples include Limousin beef carpaccio, tuna cooked on the plancha with sauce vierge, truffle tagliatelle and a red-fruit pavlova. These are examples of the restaurant's changing cooking, rather than a fixed menu to expect on every visit. Consult the current menu if you are choosing the restaurant for a particular dish. In summer, the shaded terrace and lounge sit beneath four mulberry trees. Inside, the main restaurant has around 40 covers, while a separate room can accommodate a private party of 12 to 15. The smaller room is useful for a family gathering when arranged with the owners beforehand. Parking is available at the rear on Place de la Tude, with access to the terrace from that side. The restaurant offers accessible facilities and accepts card payments. Lunch and dinner have separate service windows; Sunday is lunch only and Monday is the closing day. Book directly, especially for the private room or a terrace table, and ask about takeaway arrangements if you plan to eat elsewhere.

30 Avenue de l’Angoumois, 16190 Montmoreau

Le Bifana is a Franco-Portuguese bar and restaurant on Avenue de l'Angoumois in Montmoreau. Food is part of a sociable setting that also includes billiards, darts, sports screenings and music. It is a choice for a meal with some bar atmosphere, particularly when a weekend event is taking place. Portuguese-style cod is one of the house specialities, with a cod dish normally offered at weekends. Tapas plates and burgers with homemade chips provide other options. For a shared meal, ask about the Chapeau Grill: pieces of meat cook on spikes around a hat-shaped grill, while vegetables below catch the cooking juices. This particular dish requires advance reservation, so it is something to arrange rather than assume will be available on arrival. The restaurant has two air-conditioned rooms and approximately 40 covers. Billiards tournaments are advertised for Saturdays, and the team can arrange events or lively weekend evenings. If you would prefer a quieter meal, telephone to check the programme before choosing your time. The municipality also lists takeaway service, useful when you want dinner back at your accommodation. Dogs are welcome and card payments are accepted. Published opening hours distinguish morning and lunchtime opening from evening sessions, with a shorter Monday. Confirm kitchen times directly rather than treating all bar opening hours as meal service. The phone number and email provide direct ways to reserve the grill, ask about the weekend cod dish or check arrangements for your party.

3 Place des Marronniers, 16190 Salles-Lavalette

+33620354743

L'Envie Gourmande is a village restaurant and bar on Place des Marronniers in Salles-Lavalette. Stéphane and Carine run a place with a simple, homemade approach to food and an active role in village life. The cooking draws on local products, with French, Italian and Mediterranean influences and vegetarian choices among the restaurant's stated specialities. The setting changes with the season. A fireplace gives the dining room a focal point in colder weather, while the terrace looks out towards the Charente countryside. There are two dining rooms and a total of around 60 indoor covers, together with approximately 30 terrace places. It is a useful address for a meal in the village rather than a roadside stop. Food and social events add variety to the usual menu. The village calendar includes regional food evenings, music gatherings and activities at the bar. Past and announced themes include dishes from Alsace and Auvergne, so check the programme when you are staying nearby. These events have their own dates and should be booked directly where required. Families have practical facilities including a highchair, changing table, play area, board games and table football. Free private parking is available, dogs are welcome and takeaway service is offered. Opening hours change between the main summer period and the rest of the year. Call before travelling for dinner, or to ask what is cooking and whether a music or themed evening is scheduled during your stay.

Auberge du Moulin de Sarré

Gennes-Val-de-Loire · Fish and seafood · Lunch · Dinner

41 Sarré, 49350 Gennes-Val-de-Loire

+33241518132

Auberge du Moulin de Sarré brings the local fouée tradition into the setting of a working mill at Sarré, near Gennes. These small pockets of bread are made with stoneground flour from wheat milled at Sarré, connecting the restaurant's central speciality directly to the work of the mill. The house explains the bread's origins through the old practice of using leftover dough while a bread oven warmed up, then eating the small breads immediately with fillings. Here, the fouée menu supplies a succession of accompaniments rather than a single plated main course. Fresh butter, poultry rillettes from Ferme de la Touche, homemade spiced courgette terrine and white beans accompany the bread. Another filling, called the miller's stuffing, combines tomato, fresh mushrooms, ham and onion with fennel. Salad, cheese and a seasonal dessert complete the meal, with Anjou red wine served alongside it. A separate trout option adds fish cooked in the wood oven and Anjou white wine before the fouée selection; this preparation must be arranged ahead because of its cooking time. The auberge has three dining rooms and also welcomes private groups, offering exclusive use of the rooms, traditional menus and arrangements involving entertainment or dancing. Local performers and themed events form another part of the restaurant's life. Its emphasis stays on bread, regional accompaniments and shared tables, with the mill's flour giving the meal a particularly clear connection to its surroundings.

Les Fouées de Grézillé

Gennes-Val-de-Loire · Lunch · Dinner · Seating indoors

Lieu-dit La Bachellerie, 49320 Gennes-Val-de-Loire

+33241455357

Les Fouées de Grézillé offers a meal built around Anjou's small wood baked breads in a renovated underground restaurant at La Bachellerie. The troglodyte setting is part of the experience, pairing a comfortable cave dining space with a style of cooking centred on the wood oven. Fouées arrive as the main thread of the meal, with a range of fillings and accompaniments made using fresh seasonal ingredients and produce from local suppliers. The published menu includes pure pork rillettes, salted butter and rillauds, together with simmered white beans from Vendée and cooked fresh mushrooms. These provide several ways to fill the breads and give the meal a succession of different flavours. A green salad accompanies a cheese gratin prepared in the wood oven with Tomme d'Anjou and Guignolet, keeping the regional theme running through the meal. For dessert, the house lists homemade crémet d'Anjou with red fruit coulis, as well as ice cream or sorbet. The set formula also includes an aperitif, Anjou red or Loire rosé wine, and coffee or a fruit infusion. The restaurant works by reservation and can arrange meals for groups of at least twenty-five people. Online requests ask for the intended arrival time and the number of adults and children, with a return confirmation completing the booking. Its combination of underground surroundings, local wines and bread from the wood oven gives a focused introduction to a distinctive Anjou food tradition.

Mon–Sun 12:00–14:30, 19:00–21:00

La Route du Sel occupies a traditional tuffeau house beside the Loire in Le Thoureil, between Angers and Saumur. Built in 1851, the riverside building belongs to the landscape of the old village, and the restaurant's name recalls the transport of salt along the river from Nantes towards central France. The business is presented as a family restaurant with roots in the region across five generations. Its terrace and garden look over the Loire, while an indoor dining room provides a more sheltered setting. The kitchen's focus is fresh produce from local suppliers, with vegetables changing through the seasons and homemade pasta accompanying some dishes. River fish have a particular place here: eel, pike and pike perch appear among the specialities. The cooking also extends to nearby poultry and meat producers, with natural and regional wines alongside the food. Marie Monmousseau leads the kitchen, while pastry chef Laurent Mercier contributes desserts throughout the year. The pastry selection gives the meal its own final chapter, from a local crémet to fruit tarts and chocolate preparations. Together, the cooking and setting make this a place to explore the Loire through both the plate and the view. A table can be requested directly by telephone. The choice between dining inside and sitting beside the river gives the restaurant two distinct settings within the same house.

Chez Ninie is a pizzeria and restaurant on Grand Rue in Villebois-Lavalette, offering a straightforward choice of Italian and Mediterranean dishes. It works for a sit-down meal in the village or a takeaway to bring back after a day out. Pizza is a central part of the offering, but it is not the only reason to stop here. The selection also includes salads, grilled dishes and fresh pasta, with tagliatelle specifically among the restaurant's specialities. Vegetarian choices are available, and ice cream offers a simple way to finish. This range is useful when one person wants pizza while someone else prefers pasta or a plate from the grill. Ask about the current selection when ordering, particularly if you have a dietary requirement. There is an indoor dining room and a covered outdoor terrace. The restaurant lists 48 indoor covers and 22 terrace places, so the outdoor area is relatively small compared with the dining room. For a larger gathering, group menus can be arranged on request; contact the team before bringing a party rather than relying on space being available. Takeaway service makes Chez Ninie a practical alternative when you prefer to eat at your accommodation. Dogs are welcome, and card and contactless payments are accepted. Opening days vary in summer, when Wednesday service is added to the usual schedule. Telephone ahead to check the kitchen hours and to arrange a group meal.

Example photo of the cuisine — not photographed at this venue Airam Dato-on / Pexels

1371 Route Léo Laffargue, 24320 Vendoire

+33524141191

Restaurant L'École occupies the former village school in Vendoire, with the old school setting shaping the experience as much as the menu. This is a seasonal address: its published 2026 season runs from May into September, so contact the restaurant before planning a visit at another time of year. During the season, the flower-filled garden provides a setting for an aperitif, followed by dinner under the former covered playground. The restaurant is relatively small, with around 25 covers. It suits an evening when you want to sit down for food prepared to order and enjoy the garden surroundings, rather than simply make a quick stop between destinations. The kitchen works with fresh and local ingredients for homemade dishes. Its own food photographs illustrate garden tomatoes and harvests, smoked fish, prawns, scallops, pissaladière and lemon tart. These examples show the range of its cooking, while the actual choice depends on the current menu. Ask what is available when booking, especially if one of those ingredients is central to your plans. Sandrine Duvernois is the named operator, and reservations can be made by telephone. The restaurant lists a children's corner, accessible facilities, parking and Wi-Fi, and can discuss private celebrations. Evening meals and Sunday lunch form the published seasonal pattern. Check the opening dates, kitchen hours and arrangements for a larger party directly; the surrounding garden and small dining capacity make advance planning worthwhile.

De Loire & d'Ailleurs

Gennes-Val-de-Loire · Fish and seafood · Vegetarian · Lunch

2 quai de la Loire, 49350 Gennes-Val-de-Loire

+33241512886

De Loire & d'Ailleurs is the restaurant of chef Bryan Laubin and dining room manager Amandine Dumas at Les Rosiers-sur-Loire. Their approach brings southern French influences into an Anjou setting, drawing particularly on Provence and the Landes while keeping local ingredients in view. The kitchen presents seasonal menus, with additional suggestions written on the board alongside the main selection. The published summer menu illustrates how those influences meet: an Anjou salad combines rillauds, mushrooms and Tomme de Loire, while snails come from Cornillé-les-Caves. A tomato starter uses smoked mozzarella and focaccia with Espelette pepper, basil and tarragon. Fish and seafood preparations include mackerel with tomato gazpacho and garlic croutons, and small squid with parsley and garlic beside squid ink pasta. A breaded aubergine dish, explicitly offered as vegetarian, is accompanied by grilled courgettes, ratatouille, pepper sauce and smoked mozzarella. Meat options on that menu include veal tartare with hazelnut oil and polenta fries, plus a cut of beef selected according to supply. Desserts continue the mix of regional and more individual ideas, with an Anjou pavlova, melon parfait, vanilla cream choux and a sweet potato and white chocolate fondant. There are also cheeses and ice cream preparations. These dishes show the range of the kitchen rather than a fixed promise of what will be available on every visit. Reservations are taken directly by telephone, with the couple's team handling both kitchen and dining room.

Les Pieds Bleus

Gennes-Val-de-Loire · Lunch · Dinner · Seating indoors

20 bis rue Foulques Nerra, 49350 Gennes-Val-de-Loire

+33241679564

Les Pieds Bleus is the restaurant within La Cave aux Moines at Préban, where adjoining underground galleries have been adapted into dining rooms. The setting makes the region's relationship with stone and food unusually tangible: these former tuffeau extraction galleries also house a working mushroom farm. The restaurant cooks with mushrooms produced in that same cave complex, bringing cultivation and kitchen into close contact. Paris mushrooms, oyster mushrooms and shiitakes are the three varieties grown on site. Fouées are the other central speciality. Made on the premises and cooked in traditional wood ovens, these small breads puff into hollow pockets that can be opened while warm and filled to taste. The house describes the customary accompaniments as butter, rillettes, white beans, cheese and mushrooms. Stuffed galipettes, another local mushroom preparation, also feature among the regional dishes. Loire wines accompany the menus, and a children's menu follows the same regional theme. The interconnected rooms make the restaurant suitable for family gatherings as well as larger occasions such as birthdays and business dinners. Guests can also explore the cave through a separate guided or independent visit, learning how tuffeau was extracted and how mushroom cultivation developed underground. A wine cellar offers tastings and bottles from the Loire, including Saumur and Anjou appellations. The combination of bread ovens, cave-grown mushrooms and old quarry spaces gives this restaurant a close connection to the practical traditions of Anjou.

Bistrot Les Cluzeaux is on Rue de Ribérac in La Rochebeaucourt-et-Argentine, on the Dordogne side of the border with Charente. Mathieu took over the restaurant in 2024 and gives its cooking a traditional foundation, using fresh, local and seasonal produce when supplies allow. The address combines a seated restaurant meal with tapas and occasional themed evenings. The Retour du Marché menu changes weekly and is served at weekday lunchtimes. It offers a starter, main course and dessert, while a separate blackboard selection gives further choices. The published tapas menu includes Serrano ham, duck croquettes, baked mussels, tuna tataki and baby squid with parsley and garlic. These smaller dishes make it possible to start with several flavours before choosing a main course. Examples on the restaurant's published main menu include veal with porcini cream, duck breast with thyme and honey, and cod with porcini sabayon. A vegetarian plate changes with the kitchen's current selection. Orange cheesecake, frozen nougat and strawberry pavlova appear among the desserts. Check the latest blackboard when you arrive, since the market-led approach means individual dishes can change. Reservations are taken directly by telephone. The published weekly timetable runs from Tuesday to Saturday, with separate lunch and evening periods; Monday and Sunday are closed. Ask about the current programme if you would like to combine dinner with one of the themed evenings, and mention dietary requirements when booking. LIVIN'ITALY sits under the railway arches at Granary Wharf, on the canal side of Leeds station, and is three things in one space: a bar, an Italian restaurant and a deli. The arches give the room its shape, and the house makes a point of the fact that it is Italy lived rather than staged. The family business began in Milan in the 1980s, with the founders' parents and what they describe as a love of good food and honest hospitality; the Leeds house opened in 2012. It has been consistently named among the best Italian restaurants in Britain since. The four words the family uses for what it does — passion, tradition, integrity, simplicity — are worth repeating because the menu follows them: ingredients chosen for where they come from, dishes meant to be shared. Because the deli and the bar sit alongside the kitchen, the same address covers a morning coffee and a Negroni after midnight. Food can also be collected to take away, and gift vouchers are sold on the site. It opens at midday during the week and at ten at the weekend, running to half past eleven, and to half past midnight on Friday and Saturday. Granary Wharf is directly under Leeds station — a covered walk from the platforms. You will find LIVIN'ITALY at Wharf Approach, Granary Wharf, Leeds LS1 4BR.

Six by Nico on East Parade does one thing, and it does it differently every six weeks. The whole offer is a six-course tasting menu built around a single theme — a place, a concept, an idea — and when the six weeks are up the menu is thrown away and a new one replaces it. Recent themes have included Circus and New York. That format is the reason to know about it in advance rather than to walk past it. There is no permanent card to fall back on: what you eat depends entirely on when you come, and a dish you liked will not be there next time. It also means the room rewards a second visit in a way an ordinary restaurant does not, and the house publishes what is cooking now and what is coming next on its own site. Booking is effectively required, and vouchers are sold and redeemed against the experience — the house asks that a voucher balance be checked before arrival rather than at the table. Groups and private events are taken. It is open every day from midday to eleven at night. East Parade runs parallel to Park Row in the middle of Leeds, minutes from the Town Hall and a short walk from the station. You will find Six by Nico at 9 East Parade, Leeds LS1 2AJ.

Sukhothai is a Thai restaurant on South Parade in central Leeds, and it has been open since 2002 — long enough in a city centre to have outlasted most of what opened around it. The house describes what it does as Thai fine dining, which here means the cooking treated as a kitchen discipline rather than as a takeaway menu. The name is the old capital of Siam, the kingdom that preceded modern Thailand, and it sets the register the restaurant is aiming for. Beyond the ordinary card there is private dining and, unusually for the cuisine, a Thai bottomless brunch — a British format applied to a Thai kitchen, which tells you the room is not run as a museum piece. The hours want attention because they change across the week. Monday to Friday it is an evening restaurant only, from five to ten, and to eleven on Friday. Saturday it opens at midday and runs to eleven. Sunday it opens at midday and closes at eight. Anyone arriving for a Wednesday lunch will find it shut. South Parade is in the middle of the city, a short walk from the Town Hall and from Park Row, and about ten minutes on foot from Leeds station. You will find Sukhothai at 15 South Parade, Leeds LS1 5QS.

Tharavadu is a Kerala restaurant on Mill Hill in the centre of Leeds, and the distinction matters: Kerala is the far south-west coast of India, and its cooking — coconut, curry leaf, tamarind, a great deal of fish — is not the north Indian repertoire that most British curry houses serve. The house motto is pure devotion to quality and authenticity, and the kitchen holds to the one region. It opened in June 2014 and the recognition followed quickly. In 2015 it was named best Indian restaurant in Leeds at the Oliver Awards and placed in TripAdvisor's top ten Indian restaurants in the United Kingdom. In 2016 it appeared in the Michelin Restaurant Guide and in Harden's, and took the Oliver Award again. The restaurant describes itself as part of a wave of serious kitchens that changed how Leeds thinks about Asian food, which is a fair claim for a room that arrived before most of them. Service runs Monday to Friday in two sittings, lunch from midday to two and dinner from five to ten. On Saturday it stays open straight through from midday to ten. On Sunday it is closed altogether, which catches people out. Mill Hill sits between the station and the city square, a few minutes' walk from Leeds railway station, so this is one of the easiest addresses in the city to reach without a car. You will find Tharavadu at 7-8 Mill Hill, Leeds LS1 5DQ.

Laynes is a coffee house on New Station Street, immediately outside Leeds railway station, and it opened in 2011 into a city that had almost nothing of the kind. Fifteen years later it is the address people give when asked where the coffee is, and the restaurant is direct about what it set out to do: give Leeds a place that paid absolute attention to the quality of two ingredients, coffee and possibly milk, in a room where somebody would explain them. It has grown past that. There is a kitchen now, and the house claims some of the best breakfast and lunch in the city centre — a claim it can make because most of its competition is a chain. There is a Laynes bakery, and beans are sold through an online shop for anyone who wants to take the coffee home. Opening is early and long: half past seven in the morning to seven at night on weekdays, from eight on Saturday, and a shorter Sunday from nine to four. Tables can be booked, which for a coffee shop is unusual and says something about how busy it gets. New Station Street runs from the station entrance into the city, so this is the first door you pass arriving in Leeds by train and the last one leaving. You will find Laynes at 16 New Station Street, Leeds LS1 5DL.

Riva Blu stands on Park Row in the middle of Leeds and cooks southern Italian — which is a narrower thing than Italian, and the reason the room is worth singling out. The south is the half of Italy that gave the world tomato, chilli, oregano and durum wheat pasta, and a kitchen that commits to it eats differently from one working through the whole country. It functions as a restaurant and a bar together rather than a restaurant with a bar attached, and takes private events and celebrations in its own rooms. Gift cards are sold through the restaurant's site, and tables are booked the same way. The hours are generous by the standards of a British city centre. Midday to eleven at night from Sunday to Thursday, and midday to midnight on Friday and Saturday — one unbroken service, so a late lunch at four or an early dinner at six are both possible without waiting for a kitchen to reopen. Park Row runs through the financial quarter between the Town Hall and the river, a few minutes on foot from Leeds station and from the Victorian arcades. If you are staying anywhere central this is walking distance, and it is one of the streets that stays busy into the evening after the offices empty. You will find Riva Blu at 11-12 Park Row, Leeds LS1 5HD.

Carrer de Chopin 5, 07180 Santa Ponsa

Adelfas is a restaurant in a villa on a quiet street of Santa Ponsa, run by Jens and Nicole Bräuning, with a large sun terrace under the trees and a pavilion for bigger tables. Everything is made in the house - the couple say they cook and serve with heart rather than follow a production line - and the menu leans to fresh, gourmet plates: a butterfish ceviche with mango foam is the dish people mention, alongside fish, lamb and homemade desserts. It opens in the evening only, from six, and closes on Tuesday and Wednesday; the terrace makes it a good choice for a long summer dinner, and there is parking directly outside. Open all year, which in Santa Ponsa is not a given.

Paco's Restaurant stands on the Carrer de Ramon de Montcada in Costa de la Calma, on the western edge of Santa Ponsa. It is one of the best-reviewed places in this part of the coast, and it sits on the same short street as Las Olas — a residential road a few minutes back from the water rather than a stretch of the resort avenue. The restaurant had a website and the domain no longer resolves, so nothing is written here about the kitchen: we can point at no source for it, and guessing would be worse than saying nothing. The telephone number works and is the way to ask what is on and to book a table. The opening hours are the same every day of the week, half past twelve to half past ten at night, with no closing day and no afternoon break — which in a resort where a good part of the strip shuts between three and seven is the practical thing to know. Costa de la Calma runs west from Santa Ponsa towards Peguera. It is the quieter side: houses and apartments rather than hotels, and a walk of a few minutes to either the beach or the main avenue. You will find Paco's at Carrer de Ramon de Montcada 13, 07183 Costa de la Calma.

Las Olas is a fish restaurant on the Carrer de Ramon de Montcada, on the Costa de la Calma side of Santa Ponsa. Its own line for what it does is four words long and says everything: from the sea to the plate. The house publishes its menu as a document in four languages — Spanish, English, German and French — which is unusual and useful. It means you can read what is being served before you sit down rather than working it out from a board, and seven pages of it suggests a kitchen with more than a resort card. One thing to plan around: it is closed on Mondays. The rest of the week it opens at half past twelve and runs through to midnight without a break, which covers a late lunch, an early dinner and a late one at the same address. Tables are booked through the restaurant's own link page. Costa de la Calma adjoins Santa Ponsa to the west and is the quieter half of the same stretch of coast — residential rather than resort, a few minutes' walk from the beach and away from the main avenue. The name means calm coast and it is not marketing: the bay here is sheltered from the tramuntana, the north wind that closes the beaches on the other side of the island, which is why this corner of Mallorca fills up first in spring and empties last in autumn. You will find Las Olas at Carrer de Ramon de Montcada 18, 07180 Costa de la Calma.

Mercader del Mar stands on the Avinguda del Rei Jaume I, the avenue that runs the length of Santa Ponsa on the south-west coast of Mallorca. The kitchen is Mediterranean and its single named speciality is paella — which on this island means the rice is the dish rather than a side, and it is worth ordering as one. Two practical points the house makes about itself. It is open all year, which is not ordinary in a resort town where a good part of the strip shuts from November to March. And the kitchen runs straight through, midday to midnight, every day of the week — so there is no dead afternoon between services, the thing that catches out anyone eating on a northern European clock. There are separate cards for children and for desserts, and the site is kept in Spanish, English and German, which tells you plainly who eats here. The restaurant belongs to a Mallorcan group that also runs Puerto Portals and several houses along this avenue, so the standard is consistent between them and the menus have a family resemblance. Santa Ponsa lies about twenty minutes west of Palma, on a sheltered bay with a sand beach, and the avenue is its main street. You will find Mercader del Mar at Avinguda del Rei Jaume I 103, 07180 Santa Ponsa.

Mestiza sits on the Avinguda del Rei Jaume I in Santa Ponsa and does three things: burgers, prime steak, and thin, crisp American-style pizza. The full name says so outright, which saves anyone the trouble of guessing — this is not a Mallorcan kitchen and does not pretend to be one. The word mestiza means mixed, and the menu lives up to it. Alongside the main card there are separate lists for breakfast and for desserts, and the kitchen opens at eleven in the morning and runs to midnight, every day of the week without a closing day. Food is delivered through Just Eat. The site is kept in five languages — Spanish, English, German, French and Italian — which is an honest picture of who eats on this avenue in August. It belongs to the same Mallorcan group as Mercader del Mar and Balcón de María, a few doors along the same street, so the service and the standard are shared between them even though the kitchens are not. Santa Ponsa is about twenty minutes west of Palma by car, and the avenue runs from the bypass down towards the beach with most of the town's restaurants on it. Number 92 is towards the lower end, so this is a short walk from the sand rather than from the main road — worth knowing if you are coming back off the beach hungry. You will find Mestiza at Avinguda del Rei Jaume I 92, 07180 Santa Ponsa.

Balcón de María sits on the Avinguda del Rei Jaume I in Santa Ponsa and sells itself as one place with every experience in it. That is a fair description of the range: pinchos and tapas, what it calls crispy pizza, and a cocktail bar, under one roof. The distinction between pinchos and tapas is worth knowing before you order. A pincho is a single mouthful on a piece of bread, held together with a stick and eaten standing, counted at the end by the sticks left on the plate; a tapa is a small dish. Both are Spanish, and few places on a Mallorcan resort strip bother to serve the first properly. The house keeps separate cards for breakfast, for children, for desserts and for cocktails, and delivers through Glovo, Just Eat, Uber Eats and On The Road — four services, which in a resort town means it is used by people staying nearby as much as by people walking past. It opens every day at half past twelve and runs to eleven at night, to midnight on Friday and Saturday. It is part of the same Mallorcan group as Mercader del Mar, a few doors along the same avenue, so the two are an easy pair to alternate between over a week without eating the same thing twice. Santa Ponsa is about twenty minutes west of Palma, and this avenue is where most of its kitchens are — a walk of a few minutes from the beach and from most of the apartments. You will find Balcón de María at Avinguda del Rei Jaume I 97, 07180 Santa Ponsa.
