Peters Pie and Coffee

Peters Pie & Coffee sits at number 18 on the Šetalište Pet Danica, the seafront promenade in Herceg Novi, eighteen doors along from the sea end and a short walk from the old town steps. The name says what it sells: pies and coffee.

A pie shop is an unusual thing on this coast. Montenegrin baking runs to burek and to the sweet pastries of the Ottoman tradition, and the filled savoury pie is a northern European habit — so this is a house doing something the promenade does not otherwise offer, which is generally why a place like it survives among cafés that all serve the same three things.

It opens at eight in the morning and closes at nine at night, every day of the week with no closing day. Those are daytime hours by the standards of the promenade, where the cafés either side run past midnight, and they say this is a bakery-café rather than a bar: breakfast, a coffee in the afternoon, something taken away for the walk.

Herceg Novi lies at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, half an hour along the E65 from Morinj, and the promenade is the flattest way to see the town — the rest of it is stairs.
