Kraków is the obvious starting point, its enormous main market square, Wawel Castle and the atmospheric Kazimierz district making it Poland's most-loved city, with the Wieliczka salt mine and the sobering Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial both within easy reach. In the north, the Baltic coast strings together the rebuilt Hanseatic port of Gdańsk, the elegant seaside resort of Sopot with its long wooden pier, and wide sandy beaches that fill with families each summer. Turn south and the land rises to the Tatra Mountains, where Zakopane serves as Poland's winter and hiking capital beneath dramatic granite peaks. To the northeast lies Masuria, a green maze of more than two thousand lakes that is the country's great sailing and kayaking playground, while Warsaw offers a rebuilt old town, big museums and a lively, modern energy. Add Malbork, the vast brick castle of the Teutonic Knights, and you have enough for many trips.

When is the best time to visit Poland?
Late spring and early autumn are ideal for city breaks in Kraków, Warsaw and Gdańsk, with mild weather and thinner crowds. Summer is the season for the Baltic beaches, Masurian sailing and Tatra hiking, though the coast and lakes get busy. Winter suits Zakopane for skiing and the Christmas markets in the big cities. Autumn in particular offers pleasant weather and lower prices.
What are the must-see day trips from Kraków?
Two stand out. The Wieliczka salt mine, worked from the medieval period, is a subterranean world of chambers and chapels carved from rock salt just outside the city. The Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial near Oświęcim is a profoundly moving half-day visit. Both are easy to reach from Kraków, and the salt mine in particular works well for families.
Is the Baltic coast worth visiting?
Very much so in summer. Gdańsk pairs a beautifully rebuilt old town with maritime history, neighbouring Sopot brings a resort atmosphere and a famous wooden pier, and the wider coast offers long sandy beaches and dunes. Together with Gdynia they form the Tri-City, an easy base for combining beach days with culture.
Where should I go for lakes and the mountains?
For water, head to Masuria in the northeast, a vast network of lakes made for sailing, kayaking and quiet cottage stays. For the mountains, Zakopane is the gateway to the Tatras, with hiking in summer and skiing in winter beneath the highest peaks in the country.
