In the east, Ayia Napa is the party and beach-club capital, while neighbouring Protaras is gentler, with shallow, sheltered coves like Fig Tree Bay that suit young children. Larnaca is the handy, laid-back arrival point beside the main airport, and the cooler Troodos Mountains inland offer hiking, monasteries and traditional wine villages such as Omodos. Summers run hot and long from June into October; spring and autumn are milder and quieter. A rental car is genuinely useful for reaching beaches, ruins and mountain villages.

When is the best time to visit Cyprus?
Summer (June to August) is hot and busy, ideal for beaches and swimming. Many travellers prefer April to June and September to October, when temperatures are milder, crowds thinner and the sea stays warm well into autumn.
Do I need a car to get around Cyprus?
A hire car is highly recommended. Public transport is limited between regions, and a car makes it much easier to reach quieter beaches, archaeological sites, and the Troodos wine villages. Cyprus drives on the left.
Which area suits families versus couples or nightlife?
Protaras, Pissouri and much of Paphos suit families with calmer beaches. Couples often favour Pissouri, the Troodos villages and Limassol's dining scene. Ayia Napa and Limassol offer the liveliest nightlife.

Plenty: Paphos's Tombs of the Kings and mosaics, Limassol's castle and old town, hiking and monasteries in the Troodos Mountains, and wine tastings in villages like Omodos during the autumn grape harvest.
