Naxos is the biggest and most fertile of the Cyclades, an island with a working landscape of olive groves, vineyards and mountain villages behind its famous coastline. Arriving by sea, the first thing you see is the Portara, the great marble doorway of an unfinished Temple of Apollo standing alone on a rocky islet beside the harbour, especially striking at sunset. Behind it, Naxos Town, known as Chora, climbs in a maze of whitewashed lanes to a Venetian castle. South of town stretch some of the finest beaches in the Aegean: Agios Prokopios and Plaka run for long, soft sweeps of pale sand backed by dunes and tavernas, with shallow water that suits families and swimmers alike. Inland, the island rises toward Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades, past stone villages such as Halki, with its old distilleries and the local Kitron liqueur, and Apiranthos, built almost entirely of marble. Naxos is reached by ferry from Piraeus and other islands and by domestic flights. It rewards travellers who want both classic Cycladic beaches and a real hinterland to explore.

How do I get to Naxos?
Naxos is reached by ferry from Piraeus, Athens's port, and by frequent connections to neighbouring Cycladic islands such as Paros, Mykonos and Santorini. There is also a small airport with domestic flights via Athens. As one of the larger islands, it has good bus links and car hire for exploring beyond the main town.
What is the Portara and when is the best time to see it?
The Portara is a massive marble gateway, all that was completed of an ancient Temple of Apollo, standing on a small islet joined to Naxos Town by a causeway. It frames the sky and sea and is a short walk from the harbour. Sunset is the classic time to visit, when the marble catches the warm evening light.
Which beaches are best on Naxos?
Just south of Naxos Town, Agios Prokopios and Plaka offer long stretches of soft pale sand and shallow, clear water, well suited to families. Further along, spots like Mikri Vigla catch the wind and draw windsurfers and kitesurfers. The southwest coast has enough choice to match calm days and breezy ones alike.
Are the mountain villages worth exploring?
Yes. Inland Naxos is unusually green and mountainous for the Cyclades, rising toward Mount Zas. Villages such as Halki, known for its Kitron liqueur, and marble-built Apiranthos reward a day away from the coast, with old churches, tavernas and cooler air.
