It is big enough to suit very different holidays: Chaweng brings the long, buzzing main beach and the island's nightlife, while Lamai offers the same warm water with a more relaxed pace. On the north coast, Bophut and its Fisherman's Village pair a gentle swimming bay with restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses, boutiques and a much-loved Friday walking-street market. Maenam and Choeng Mon stay calmer still, with shallow water that suits families. Between the beaches you can climb to the golden Big Buddha, cool off at jungle waterfalls, and catch fast ferries onward to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Because Samui lies on the Gulf side rather than the Andaman coast, its weather runs on a different rhythm, staying sunnier through the middle of the year when the west coast is wet.

When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?
Because Koh Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand rather than on the Andaman coast, its weather differs from islands like Phuket. The driest, sunniest stretch is generally around February to April, and the wettest months tend to be October to December, when the northeast monsoon brings the most rain. Samui often stays sunnier than the west coast during the middle of the year, which makes it a popular alternative in those months.
Which beach area should I stay in?
Chaweng suits those who want the main beach, plenty of amenities and the busiest nightlife. Lamai offers a similar beach with a calmer pace. Bophut and Fisherman's Village are charming and central for dining, with gentle water. Maenam and Choeng Mon are the quietest and most family-friendly. Lipa Noi on the west coast is peaceful and good for sunsets.
How do I get to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao from Koh Samui?
Fast ferries connect Samui with both islands, run by operators such as Lomprayah, Seatran and Songserm. Boats leave from piers including Nathon, Bangrak (Seatran) and Maenam. Koh Phangan is a short crossing, and Koh Tao is typically reached in roughly one and a half to two hours. Schedules and prices vary by operator and season, so check current timetables when you book.
How do I get around on the island?
Samui has a ring road linking the main beaches. Shared songthaew pickups run set routes and are the budget option, while metered and negotiated taxis are widely available. Many visitors rent a car or scooter for freedom to explore waterfalls, the Big Buddha and quieter beaches, though riders should be confident and cautious in the local traffic and always wear a helmet.
What is there to see beyond the beaches?
The golden Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai is a must-see landmark on the north-east coast. Inland you can visit jungle waterfalls such as Na Muang, reached just off the ring road. Fisherman's Village in Bophut is worth an evening, especially for the Friday walking-street market. West-coast Lipa Noi and Nathon town round out an easy day of sightseeing.
Is Koh Samui good for families?
Yes. The north-coast bays are the gentlest, with Bophut, Maenam and Choeng Mon offering calm, shallow water that is easy for children. These areas are quieter than Chaweng and Lamai while still close to restaurants and shops. Waterfalls, the Big Buddha and short boat trips give families plenty to do beyond the sand.
