Koh Tao is small enough to circle in an afternoon, yet it has built a global reputation as one of the most accessible places in the world to learn to dive. Warm, clear water, shallow reefs close to shore and a dense cluster of dive schools mean beginners can go from never having used a mask to a certified diver in a matter of days, while more experienced divers explore deeper sites and pinnacles offshore. The main hub is Sairee Beach on the west coast, a long stretch of sand backed by cafes, dive shops and sunset bars, while quieter bays around the island reward anyone willing to walk or take a longboat. Just off the northwest tip, the linked sandbars of Koh Nang Yuan form one of the most photographed spots in the Gulf of Thailand and offer superb snorkelling straight off the beach. Away from the water, steep jungle viewpoints look down over the coastline, and the pace stays relaxed and barefoot. Do I need to be able to dive to enjoy Koh Tao?
Not at all. Koh Tao is famous for teaching beginners, but there is plenty for non-divers too, including excellent snorkelling, boat trips around Koh Nang Yuan, jungle viewpoints and relaxed beach bays. Many visitors come purely to swim, snorkel and unwind.
How do I get to Koh Tao?
Most travellers arrive by ferry from the mainland or from the neighbouring islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. The crossing is a common part of a wider Gulf of Thailand trip, so many people combine all three islands. Sea conditions vary by season, so allow flexibility in your timing.
When is the best time to visit?
The drier, calmer months generally bring the best diving visibility and sea conditions, while the wetter part of the year can mean rougher crossings and more rain. Conditions in the Gulf of Thailand differ from Thailand's west coast, so it is worth checking seasonal patterns before you book.
Is Koh Tao good for snorkelling as well as diving?
