Glenda's

Glenda's is a neighbourhood restaurant at Hyde Square, where Jan Smuts Avenue meets North Road in Johannesburg's Hyde Park area. Chef Glenda Lederle brings a background in patisserie to a restaurant that combines seasonal savoury cooking, a garden dining area and an extensive interest in baking. Her earlier work included The Patisserie in Illovo and Katerina's at Kurland Estate, followed by time training in kitchens in London, Berlin and New York. At Hyde Square, that pastry experience appears in cookies, brownies, petits fours and choux pastries made in house. Celebration cakes can be ordered separately, including chocolate brownie popcorn and salted caramel popcorn versions. Dotty Choux, the takeaway patisserie counter, provides another way to enjoy the baking without arranging a full meal. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with afternoon tea also part of the offer. Its seasonal approach includes support for local farmers and produce suppliers, and dishes may be finished with herbs and flowers. Dietary substitutions are available for many requirements and can be discussed with the team. Drinks range from organic coffee and soft drinks to craft beer, local wine and cocktails that change with the seasons. The garden provides outdoor tables, including larger settings for family gatherings. Inside, a separate choux choux lounge forms part of the restaurant's social spaces.
