Gutsgasthof Frath

Gutsgasthof Frath is a rural inn on a wooded plateau above the valleys of the Bavarian Forest. The Geiger family's working farm is central to its cooking, giving the dining room a close connection to the surrounding land. Traditional Bavarian dishes share the menu with game from the family's own hunting grounds, old Bavarian sweet dishes and homemade cakes. Meat, sausage and dairy products also come from the farm's own production. The indoor dining room seats about fifty people, while a terrace provides another place to eat and drink when the weather is fine. A visit can be built around a cooked lunch, a slice of cake with coffee, or a cold Bavarian bread platter. Hot evening meals are reserved for guests staying at the inn, an important distinction for visitors coming only to eat. The farm combines pasture management with forestry and places an emphasis on using both responsibly. Cattle graze outdoors, and milk is used for calves and for making the house butter. Around the property, a playground with a trampoline and a small play barn add interest for families. There are also goats and a deer enclosure, making the setting more than a conventional village restaurant. Woodland walks and the open views are part of the appeal of coming here. The inn accepts cash rather than bank or credit cards. Its food and farm belong to the same place, making the connection between the landscape and the plate unusually direct.
