The Bull Run occupies the base of the Balalaika hotel on Maude Street in Sandton. Opened on 28 October 2000, the restaurant connects its identity to the surrounding financial district, taking inspiration from the New York Stock Exchange and traditional New York grill houses. A refurbishment completed in July 2018 introduced interiors by Tristan Du Plessis of Studio A, with custom lighting, upholstered furniture and handmade wall tiles.

Beef anchors the menu, with fillet, rump, sirloin, rib eye and T-bone among the cuts available. The kitchen also lists ostrich fillet and springbok loin, alongside pork ribs and lamb cutlets. Main courses come with a selection of accompaniments that includes potatoes, rice, grilled vegetables, steamed bread and pap. Beyond the grill, dishes include slow-braised oxtail with red wine and rosemary, pepper steak pie and a Durban-style lamb curry.

There are alternatives for a table with different appetites. Starters include calamari with lemon butter and prawns with cheese sauce, while the burger selection includes beef, chicken and a vegan option made with Beyond Meat, avocado, fresh greens and vegan mayonnaise. Salads range from Mediterranean chickpeas with feta to beetroot with carrots and berries.

The Dollar Bar serves the restaurant’s own craft beer, wines and cocktails, including custom gin and tonic combinations. A separate private dining room provides a quieter setting for celebrations or business conversations. Tables can be reserved, and the restaurant takes enquiries for private functions.
