Brač is the largest island in Dalmatia and the closest of the big Split islands to the mainland, which makes it one of the easiest Adriatic escapes to reach. Ferries cross the Brač Channel from Split in well under an hour, most of them landing at Supetar, the island's main town and administrative centre on the north coast. Brač's signature image lies on the opposite shore at Bol: Zlatni Rat, the tapering white-pebble spit that shifts its point with the wind and current and appears on countless Croatian postcards. Above it rises Vidova Gora, at around 780 metres the highest summit of any Adriatic island, with a view that takes in Hvar across the channel. The island's other great story is stone — the pale Brač limestone quarried here for centuries and used, famously, in Diocletian's Palace in Split, with the craft still taught at the stonemasonry school in Pučišća. Between the coast and the interior you'll find olive groves, fragrant pine, quiet fishing coves and hilltop villages that reward anyone willing to drive inland.

How do I get to Brač?
Car and passenger ferries run frequently from Split to Supetar, crossing the Brač Channel in roughly 50 minutes. In summer there are also catamaran links to Bol and a seasonal connection toward Makarska. The island has a small airport on the plateau above Bol used mainly for seasonal and light traffic. Split remains the main international gateway.
What makes Zlatni Rat special?
Zlatni Rat ('Golden Horn') is a long, narrow spit of white pebbles that juts into the sea near Bol. Its distinctive tip actually changes shape and direction with the prevailing winds and currents, so no two visits look quite the same. It is a favourite for swimming, sunbathing and windsurfing when the afternoon breeze picks up.
Is Brač good for families and beaches?
Yes. Alongside Zlatni Rat there are pebble coves and shallow, sheltered swimming spots around Supetar, Sutivan and Milna. Distances are manageable, the water is clear, and the mix of beach, pine shade and easy harbour towns suits families. A car helps for reaching the quieter bays.
