Hvar is the long, narrow ribbon of an island that reaches out from the middle Dalmatian coast, and for many travellers it is the definitive Croatian summer. Hvar Town, gathered around the marble expanse of St Stephen's Square, brings the yachts, the cocktail terraces and the after-dark energy the island is famous for. Yet the rest of Hvar moves at an older, slower rhythm. Stari Grad, the main car-ferry gateway from Split, grew out of a Greek colony founded in 384 BC, and just behind it stretches the Stari Grad Plain, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the field boundaries laid out by those first Greek farmers are still worked today. Jelsa and Vrboska offer harbours without the crowds, while the interior rolls through vineyards and the purple lavender fields that gave Hvar its scent and its nickname. With some of the highest sunshine totals in Europe, the island rewards slow days: swimming off the Pakleni Islands, tasting Plavac Mali wine near Sveta Nedjelja, and watching the light soften over the Adriatic each evening.

How do I get to Hvar?
Most visitors arrive by ferry from Split. Car ferries run to Stari Grad, a short drive from Hvar Town, while faster passenger catamarans dock right in Hvar Town's harbour. There is also a car ferry from Drvenik on the mainland to Sućuraj at the island's eastern tip. Split airport is the usual gateway for international flights.
When is the best time to visit Hvar?
June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, long sunny days and thinner crowds than the July–August peak. The lavender typically flowers around June. Spring and early autumn suit walkers and wine visits, while many restaurants and ferry frequencies wind down in winter.
Do I need a car on Hvar?
For Hvar Town and Stari Grad you can manage without one, using local buses, taxis and boats. A car (or scooter) helps if you want to reach quieter villages, lavender fields and remote coves at your own pace. Note that parts of Hvar Town's old centre are pedestrian-only.
