The Gili Islands are three small, sandy islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, and their biggest charm is what they leave out: there are no cars or motorbikes on any of them. Getting around means walking, cycling or riding in a small horse-drawn cart, which keeps the whole place quiet and slow. Each island has its own character. Gili Trawangan, the largest, is the liveliest, with the widest choice of places to stay, eat and gather at sunset. Gili Meno in the middle is the smallest and most peaceful, a favourite for couples and anyone wanting to do very little. Gili Air, closest to Lombok, strikes a balance, with an easy village feel and reefs a short swim from the beach. All three are ringed by coral and are known for snorkelling and diving, with a good chance of seeing green sea turtles gliding through the shallows. Days here revolve around the water, hammocks and long walks around islands you can circle on foot. The Gilis suit travellers who want simple island life without traffic or crowds of vehicles. How do I get to the Gili Islands?
Most visitors reach the Gilis by boat, either from Bali or from the coast of Lombok. Fast boats and slower public boats both serve the islands, and you then hop between the three by local boat. Because there are no vehicles, you walk from the jetty to your accommodation or use a cart.
Which Gili island should I choose?

Can I really see turtles when snorkelling?
