Kauai is the oldest and most heavily eroded of the main Hawaiian islands, and that age shows in its landscape: knife-edged ridges, deep valleys and a blanket of green that has earned it the nickname the Garden Isle. Its most famous feature, the Na Pali Coast, is a stretch of towering sea cliffs and hidden beaches on the northwest shore that cannot be reached by road; visitors experience it by hiking trail, by boat or from the air. Inland, Waimea Canyon carves a vivid, layered gorge often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The island's character shifts by region: the sunny south around Poipu is known for its beaches, resorts and reliable weather, while the lush north around Hanalei brings a laid-back bay, taro fields and rainier, greener scenery. Between them lie waterfalls, botanical gardens, rivers you can kayak and wildlife-rich shorelines. Kauai is quieter and less developed than Oahu, which is much of its appeal, but that also means fewer roads and a slower pace. Because a single highway rings most of the island without crossing the Na Pali cliffs, planning your base and drives matters. Note that Hawaii has strict short-term rental rules that vary by area.

How do I see the Na Pali Coast?
The Na Pali Coast has no road, so it is seen by boat tour, by air, or on foot via the coastal trail from the north shore. Boat and kayak trips run seasonally and depend on ocean conditions, while the hiking trail is strenuous and can require permits for longer sections. Choose the option that matches your fitness, and always check current conditions and any permit rules.
Should I stay on the north shore or the south shore?
The south shore around Poipu is generally sunnier and drier, with popular beaches and resorts, while the north shore around Hanalei and Princeville is greener, more scenic and often rainier. Each side has a distinct feel, and the island is small enough to explore widely from either. Consider weather preferences and which sights you most want to reach.
