Across the water, Varenna offers a quieter, romantic waterfront, while Menaggio and Tremezzo anchor the western shore near Villa Carlotta and the film-famous Villa del Balbianello. The city of Como itself, at the southern tip, brings a silk-making heritage, a lakefront funicular and easy train links. How do I get to Lake Como?
Lake Como lies about 45 km north of Milan and is easy to reach by train, with Como San Giovanni station on the Milan-Chiasso line. The A9 motorway links Milan towards Switzerland, and Milan's Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio airports are all within reach. Once at the lake, the passenger and car ferries are the best way to move between the shoreline towns.
How do I get around the lake?
The public boat service connects the main towns and is the classic way to travel Como, linking Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzo with regular passenger ferries and some car ferries in the central lake. Trains run down the eastern shore to Varenna and Lecco. Roads are narrow and winding, so many visitors leave the car parked and rely on boats.

Bellagio, at the point where the lake's branches meet, is the essential stop for its stepped lanes and gardens. Varenna offers a quieter romantic waterfront, Menaggio a lively western-shore base, and Como city anchors the south with its cathedral and funicular.
