Malta squeezes an outsized amount into a small Mediterranean archipelago, and its English-speaking, easy-to-reach setup makes it a simple place to base yourself. Valletta, the fortified capital, is a UNESCO-listed grid of honey-coloured stone packed with churches, palaces and gardens overlooking the Grand Harbour, with a famous Caravaggio inside St John's Co-Cathedral. Along the coast, Sliema and St Julian's form the modern hub for the seafront promenade, shopping, dining and nightlife, and they make a practical base with good transport links. Inland sits Mdina, the walled Silent City, whose lanes empty out and turn atmospheric once the day-trip coaches leave. Across a short ferry, Gozo feels greener, slower and more rural, built for relaxed drives, coastal walks and the ancient Ggantija temples, with Victoria at its heart. Tiny Comino between the two islands is barely developed and best known for the electric-blue water of the Blue Lagoon, which is glorious early or late but overwhelmed at midday in peak summer. With short distances, ferries and buses linking it all, a single home base can cover cities, coast and islands. Renting an apartment or a Gozo farmhouse keeps you close to harbours, markets and local restaurants.

When is the best time to visit Malta?

The Blue Lagoon on Comino is at its best early in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially in July and August, when the middle of the day gets very crowded. Going outside peak hours, or visiting in shoulder season, gives you the bright turquoise water with far more space to enjoy it.
